Presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney released a new ad on Friday aimed at attacking an earlier missive by super PAC Priorities USA Action. The super PAC's ad had implied that Romney was responsible for a Kansas City woman's death from cancer, by attempting to draw a link between Romney's closure of a plant while head of Bain Capital, which resulted in the loss of the family's health insurance, and the woman's death.
President Barack Obama's campaign, which CBS News reported cleared the super PAC for "his top donors earlier this year," has drawn heavy criticism for its perceived support of the ad's message. Romney's new ad, which was released directly by the campaign itself, echoes that criticism, asking viewers to consider what it says "about a president's character when his campaign tries to use the tragedy of a woman's death for political gain."
Here is some of the key information regarding the character battle brewing regarding the ads by the Romney campaign and Priorities USA Action.
* Obama's campaign has denied any wrongdoing connected to the ad produced by Priorities USA Action. CBS News quoted White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, who said during the daily briefing on Friday that the super PAC is a third party "that we obviously have no control over," and that the president's campaign does not have contact with them.
* Romney's ad, and many conservatives as well, argue the opposite is the case, and that the Obama campaign is to blame for the ad. Romney's ad, which is entitled "America Deserves Better," features a narrator who asks whether or not America deserves more than a "president who will do or say anything to stay in power."
* Romney advisor Eric Fehrnstrom went on the attack Friday as well, saying the ads from Obama and his supporters "diminish the office of president and insult the American people," as quoted by The Hill.
* Carney attempted to steer criticism back towards Romney and his campaign on Friday, saying that the GOP candidate had presented a "dishonest representation" of the president's views on welfare reform, and that the president is focused on the economy, as also reported by The Hill.
