Basic Education Requirement for Research Ecologist, GS-0408:

A degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that includes at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

Basic Education Requirement for Research Fish Biologist, GS-0482:

A degree with a major study in biology, zoology, or biological oceanography that included at least 30 semester hours (SH) in biological and aquatic science and 15 SH in the physical and mathematical sciences. This course work must have included: at least 15 SH of preparatory training in zoology beyond introductory biology or zoology in such courses as invertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology, advanced vertebrate zoology, genetics, entomology, and parasitology; and at least 6 SH of training applicable to fishery biology in such subjects as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, oceanography, algology, planktonology, marine or fresh water ecology, invertebrate ecology, principles of fishery population dynamics, or related course work in the field of fishery biology; and at least 15 SH of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, or statistics.

Basic Education Requirement for Research?Wildlife Biologist, GS-0486:

A degree with a major in wildlife biology, zoology, or botany that included at least 30 semester hours (SH) of course work in biological science and 15 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and earth sciences. This course work must have included: at least 9 semester hours of training applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, principles of population dynamics, or related course work in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 SH in zoological subjects such as invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, embryology, animal physiology, entomology, herpetology, parasitology, and genetics; and at least 9 SH in the field of botany and related plant science; and at least 15 SH of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, soils, and/or geology.

In addition the basic education requirements described above, you must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree that is in a directly related field of study appropriate for this position.

Basis of Rating: Category rating will be used in the ranking and selection process for this position. The quality categories are Best Qualified and Qualified. If you meet the basic qualification and eligibility requirements of this position, you will be contacted via email after the vacancy announcement closes and given 5 calendar days to submit narrative responses that address the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required to perform the duties of this position. You will be rated and ranked based on the information you provide in your resume as well as the responses you submit to the required KSAs. Veterans' preference rules for category rating will be applied. The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are as follows:

1.?Ability to formulate and conduct innovative research on terrestrial vertebrate ecology as it applies to natural resource management with emphasis on the quantitative aspects. Research emphases include terrestrial vertebrate ecology and management, especially those of either avian and/or herpetological species; and quantitative aspects of applied ecology and resource management such as experimental and sampling design, population modeling, computer-intensive methods, spatial analysis or Bayesian and frequentist statistics applied to one or more of the following subjects: Population and community ecology; climate change; invasive species, predator-prey dynamics, fire ecology, landscape/spatial ecology; impacts of renewable energy; environmental assessment and monitoring; habitat modeling and management; vulnerability and risk assessment; wildlife science.

2. Ability to successfully collaborate on applied and basic research with university faculty, professional natural resource agencies, non-government organizations, and professional organizations.

3. Ability to publish research findings in peer reviewed (ISI-based) scientific journals of regional, national or international scope, as well as other non-ISI based publication outlets.

4.?Ability to apply formal training in, and application of advanced quantitative techniques related to the ecology, conservation and management of terrestrial vertebrates.

5.?Ability to develop and instruct university courses, including but not limited to formal courses in terrestrial wildlife ecology and management with particular emphasis on the quantitative aspects; and/or statistical analysis for wildlife and fisheries scientists including computer intensive methods. Ability to develop and instruct short course on quantitative tools for researching terrestrial vertebrate ecology and management for audiences ranging from graduate students to professional in management and conservation agencies and organizations.

6. Ability to present applied and basic ecological research before international, national, regional or local professional organizations and groups, and develop and participate in society-sponsored workshops and special sessions.
