I have a record of Marijuana distribution, that I pleaded to, dropping other charges. I also have a theft under $500 from a fast food restaurant when I worked there. As stated this was around the age of 18-19. My child record is pretty bad, however this can no longer be pulled up.
I lived a troubled childhood, missing parents, drugs, and I spent a lot of time away. Now I have this strong desire to help kids. I am currently doing Network Administration and IT work at a small company (that doesn?t pay for it, its not my job I mean, but they know I can do it, and know my situation). I want to break free from the workforce trap I have built for myself with my criminal record. I have worked steadily since my release from county jail at the age of 21. 1 1/2 years as electronics sales and now coming on to 3 years as computer networking/core business objectives.
I can?t find another job. I am in the computer field, very skilled, however my record always fails me at the end of any interview. I really would like to help troubled teens, I don?t even mind kids, but I know as a teen (around 13) I became very defiant and it seemed no one understood. I turn 26 this month and I want to use my past history and my age to relate to teens and be a friend when needed. I really feel this is the only way I can repent for all the problems I have caused. I know it will make my a happy person to help others as well.
I fear my record will be seen as an issue instead of a tool. I went to a program called New Dominion, a Three Springs company, before it sold to a new company Sequel. Great program. I called and checked online for career opportunities only to find they want some type of social college degree, and I am assuming a clean record (as you would with any job now a days).
I?ve made mistakes. I have learned tools from different encounters in life and now I have learned to mold my lifestyle and change my outlook on life. How can I spread that? How can I help? I am 26 and pay bills, I don?t make much and school just seems to overwhelming. I need a career change. Can anyone help ex-convicts with careers? Do any teen counseling programs look for adults that had similar problems as a teen?
Thanks, in advance. I hope I provided as much detail as possible to see peoples views on my dilemma!
I don?t mind working with adults, however I am only 26. I personally dont think I would carry much weight to someone older. I guess I could aim for 18-21ish?
As for scared straight, I don?t agree with that. A prideful teen will only be propelled by threats, I know thats the type I was. I believe in actually spending time and talking, making a friend that they can relate too. Some of the best times of my life was 15-17 in an outdoor program where the counselors spent 5 days straight and two days off with the teens. The only effective place I have ever seen. I want to work somewhere like that.
