Credit Cards and Home Equity Loans - Read the Fine Print | All ...

These days, everyone?s lives are burdened with paperwork. With newspapers, magazines, bills, junk mail, and who-knows-what taking up space in their day, few people have time to look at every piece of paper that comes their way. Unfortunately, it?s becoming more and more necessary to carefully examine bills and contracts, as various penalties are finding their way into the fine print of credit card bills, home equity loan and mortgage contracts. It truly pays to take the time to read the fine print in these documents.

Up to one third of major credit card issuers now include a ?universal default clause? in their credit card terms. The UDC allows the credit card company to raise the interest rate on the account if the cardholder pays his or her bills late. This can apply even if the credit card bill is paid on time! It is important to find out if your credit card terms include a UDC, as your interest rate could be affected by whether or not you pay your telephone bill on time. This is just one of many ways that credit card companies are increasing their profits, but it isn?t one that they?re willing to advertise. When a letter comes in the mail from your credit card company that says ?change in your credit card terms? or something like it, make sure that you read it. Failure to do so could raise the interest rate on your credit card substantially.

Another ?fine print? issue that has been turning up recently is the prepayment penalty that is now being attached to up to half of all mortgages and homeequityhelp.net home equity loans. The volatile nature of interest rates in the lending market has inspired many homeowners to repeatedly refinance their homes in the last few years. Lenders often hold a mortgage for only a few months before the borrower finds a lower rate and refinances, paying off the original loan. In order to ?protect? the profits from lending the money, up to half of all lenders are now requiring a substantial penalty if the loan is paid off prior to a specified date. These fees can amount to several thousand dollars on a primary mortgage and several hundred dollars on a home equity loan. Most borrowers would not be pleased to go through the process of refinancing their home, only to find out at closing that they owed a penalty of five thousand dollars. Instead, be sure to read the fine print in your mortgage or home equity loan documents before you sign them.

As the lending and credit markets become more and more competitive, lenders are doing more and more to increase their profits. They are not necessarily doing so in obvious ways, however, so it is always in your best interests to read any document carefully before you sign. Your failure to do so could cost you quite a bit of money.

Drug Arrests ? A Step to Clean The Society | soofpr.com

Honestly if drug addiction is a crime and a menace then more threatening is the drug smuggling activity to both human life and the peace and order of mankind. Though this is cruel act crushing the society by each passing day, the law and order of any country also implement stringent rules to restrict the horrible drug trifling activity. In any country trading of drugs is a crime and can be considered as a punishable offense. If by any chance there is some way you or your friend is guilty of possession of drugs then please be careful that it is a serious crime and calls for a major punishment. In every country many news are heard about plenty of drug arrests and if there is sufficient proof and the convicted is found to be guilty it can be a situation of serious trouble causing high penalty, imprisonment and much worse punishment. However the level and severity of the punishment is depended on various factors like quantity of drug possession, history of the convicted in this crime field, and the time and situation when the convicted got arrested.

DEA or the Drug Enforcement Administration is nothing but an organization working for the federal government maintaining the law and regulations for trafficking, selling and distribution of controlled substances. Especially in the state of Texas, it is an unforgiveable crime which entertains severe punishment. According to the DEA news, many drug arrests remains recorded in their files specially those who are caught with the Class A drugs. The entrusted agency of the US is responsible for controlling the trafficking and they always do their best to keep the society safe of such menace. Several DEA news come which states that there are many drug cartels operate in United States and other countries and where illegal and illegitimate drugs are parceled into the US soil by these drug cartels. To control this activity the government appoints specialized agency and implement stringent laws according to which convicted persons are seriously punished if found guilty.

There are several laws in this context where some are extremely severe like cocaine possession can bring out jail imprisonment for 5years to a maximum of 40 years or may be lifetime in acute cases. Even the financial penalties are too large sum for any individual. However possession of marijuana can bring in less punishment depending on the quantity. Alas, it is an initiative to keep the human society clean and free from such life threatening drugs.

"It Takes as Much Energy to Wish as it Does to Plan." [Quotables]

"It Takes as Much Energy to Wish as it Does to Plan."This quote, from former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, is a good reminder that you can sit on your butt and think about doing something or you can actually use that time to plan on doing it. Having hopes and dreams is great, but having plans to achieve them is better. If you find you're spending a lot of time thinking about doing something, turn it into a plan. You don't necessarily have to act on that plan, but if you decide to you'll be ready. And it definitely doesn't hurt to see what your wishes look like when they're more realistic. They might seem more achievable than you originally believed.

China drub sorry Laos in World Cup qualifier (AFP)

HONG KONG (AFP) ? China stormed into the third round of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers on Thursday as they smashed six past hapless Laos to claim a 13-3 aggregate victory.

Laos went into the match in Vientiane trailing 7-2 after the first leg and there was no let-up from the visitors as Qu Bo opened the scoring after 24 minutes before Yu Hanchao put China two up at half-time.

Visay Phaphouvanin gave the home side a glimmer of hope with a strike soon after the restart, but the lowly Laotians faded as the half wore on and goals from Yu, Deng Zhuoxiang and first-leg hat-trick star Yang Xu sealed their fate.

The 6-1 win on the night takes China through to the penultimate stage of Asian qualifying, when big guns Japan, Australia and South Korea enter the competition, along with Bahrain and North Korea.

There was disappointment in southern China as Hong Kong crashed out after a 5-0 thumping at home by Saudi Arabia to add to the 3-0 reverse they suffered in the first leg.

It was a good night for Middle Eastern sides, with Kuwait, Syria and Jordan all progressing easily at the expense of the Philippines, Tajikistan and Nepal respectively.

After suffering a 9-0 hiding in the first leg, Nepal retrieved a modicum of pride, holding Jordan to a 1-1 draw in Kathmandu thanks to an 80th-minute equaliser from Bharat Khawas.

Kuwait came from a goal down to beat the Philippines 2-1 in Manila, while two goals in each half saw Syria through 6-1 over two legs.

Two second-half goals from Vietnam saw them come from 1-0 down to beat 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar 2-1 in Hanoi, but the Gulf side's three-goal cushion from the first leg was enough to keep them on the road to Brazil.

A goal in each half took Bangladesh to a 2-0 win at home against Lebanon, but the visitors went through thanks to their 4-0 first-leg victory.

Oman were two goals up against Myanmar in Yangon -- and 4-0 on aggregate -- when the match was abandoned because of crowd trouble.

In Jakarta, Indonesia survived a late surge from Tajikistan to hold on for a 4-3 win -- 5-4 on aggregate -- thanks to a Cristian Gonzales brace and goals from Mohammad Nasuha and Muhammad Ridwan.

It was honours even in the clash of the south-east Asian neighbours in Kuala Lumpur, Jia Yi Shi's 73rd-minute equaliser for Singapore cancelling out Mohd Sali's opener for Malaysia. Singapore went through 6-4 on aggregate.

Second-half substitute Bahodir Nasimov bagged a pair as Uzbekistan, Asian Cup semi-finalists earlier this year, beat Kyrgyzstan 3-0 in Tashkent to record a 7-0 aggregate victory.

Gouramangi Singh equalised deep into injury time as India came from two down to rescue a draw at home to the United Arab Emirates, but again the Gulf side's first-leg advantage saw them through.

At the West Bank venue of Al Ram, Datsakorn Thonglao scored twice to give Thailand a 2-2 draw against Palestine and a 3-2 aggregate win.

Thailand won the first leg 1-0 but that was cancelled out after just six minutes on Thursday when Murad Elyyan levelled the tie.

Datsakorn restored the one-goal cushion in the 33rd minute but Elyyan took his international tally to an impressive eight in six internationals when he made it 2-1 on the stroke of full-time.

But with the Thais holding an away goal advantage, Palestine were caught on the break and Datsakorn scored his second of the game in stoppage time.

In Male, Mohammed Khalatbari's first-half strike was enough to give Iran a 1-0 victory over the Maldives and a 5-0 aggregate victory.

Former Asian Cup winners Iraq, who last made the World Cup finals in 1986, drew 0-0 in Yemen but went through courtesy of their 2-0 win in the first game.

In their quest to improve their own SEO our Guest Blogger Lucidica now shares their favourite SEO resources with us all. Here are their thoughts:

Now, we don?t specialise in SEO, nor do we want to, but we did want to know enough so we could do as much of the SEO effort ourselves.? Over the years we?ve accumulated some great resources on the topic so if you are looking at making a start in your understanding of this all-important small business marketing method, here are our top 5 learning resources.

1.??Site Visibility Internet Marketing? FREE podcast

By far this is the best resource we?ve found ? especially if you are not too technical.? Andy, Kelvin and the crew provide just enough info on the pertinent topics in the vast complex field that is SEO.? The nuggets that drop out of this now weekly cast are enough to make anyone hooked on SEO salivate.

We strongly recommend you listen to their old casts (as many as you can fit in when at the gym!) and add their casts to your MP3 player list for a weekly top-up.? The?premium internet marketing podcast also comes highly recommended.

P.S. You?ll recognise the friendly accents as local.? Based down in Brighton the Internet Marketing Podcast is the UKs #1 online marketing cast, and from last count, #2 in iTunes world-wide!

?

2.??Search Engine Optimisation for Dummies? book

These dummy books are always a great way to get across the basics in any field.? Grab this one first and probably skim through the first few chapters before starting the above podcasts.

This book will be a good reference for you when listening to the Internet Marketing Podcasts.

?

3.??50 Ways to Make Google Love Your Website? book

When fellow Partner of the British Library, Johnny Martin (who talks about numbers and finance for small business), first told me of this book I couldn?t get the?great?Paul Simon 1975 hit song ?50 ways to leave your lover? out of my head for days.? Nevertheless I managed to get a copy and found the book useful and relevant for the market we work with, small businesses ? those with 1-50 staff.

This book is the intermediate of the three recommended here so once you?ve had your fill of SEO for Dummies, grab this one.? Since Johnny first mentioned it I?ve had more than 5 other people recommend it, which is enough to make the list here.

?

4.??131 (Legitimate) Link Building Strategies? article

It may be almost 10 years old but this article is a classic.? By the time you are half-way through the above podcasts and consumed most of the above two books you should be into executing some tactics.? This article provides splendid ideas on how to go about building links to your website (still a hugely important part of effective SEO).? Be sure to look through the rest of the?SearchEngineWatch.com website too.

?

5??The Art of SEO? book

This is the advanced material, some may not need to go this far but if your thirst for SEO knowledge is not yet quenched, this is the book for you.

Strongly recommended by some of the guys at Google and comes highly rated from other sources I checked, so this book makes my reading list.

?

Bonus:??Clockwork Pirate? FREE e-book

A bonus 6th resource for you this was a recent find, and it?s gold.? Kelvin is the main contributor in recent years to the Site Visibility Internet Marketing podcasts listed at resource #1 above.

When I sat down and read these 63 pages over a strong coffee (OK, coffees) I couldn?t believe the ideas, value and experience he was giving away here.? And for FREE, well almost free ? there is a great little marketing catch you?ll see at the site.? You don?t need to part with any wonga, but it?s an innovative way for Kelvin to get some link love of his own.

The Breakup: Why Ireland Is No Longer the Vatican's Loyal Follower (Time.com)

Ireland has long been the model of a loyal Catholic state, an ask-no-questions adherent to the Vatican's word. But following more than 15 years of church child-abuse scandals and cover-ups, that seems to be changing. Today the relationship between the two is at an historic low, with the Holy See recalling its ambassador after Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny launched an unprecedented public attack on the institution's handling of child-abuse allegations.

In a rare and serious diplomatic move, the ambassador Papal Nuncio returned to Rome on Monday following what a Vatican spokesman described as the "excessive reaction" in Ireland to the government's latest report on clerical abuse. The spokesman was referring to a scathing speech Kenny gave on July 20, in which he berated the Vatican for its part in covering up child-abuse allegations against its clergy. The prime minister's speech accused the Vatican of "downplaying" the "rape and torture of children" to uphold its reputation, and spoke of the "dysfunction, disconnection and elitism, the narcissism that dominates the culture of the Vatican to this day." (See TIME's Top 10 religion stories of 2010.)

The inquiry, which covered 1996 to 2009, found that although the Vatican had in place a policy, developed by Irish bishops in 1996, of reporting suspected cases of clerical child abuse to police, it undermined that policy by telling bishops in 1997 that it violates church law. While awaiting a response from the Vatican (another reason the ambassador was recalled, says the spokesman), Ireland has proposed new legislation to make it a crime not to report child sex abuse, even if the act is revealed in the secrecy of the confessional - a controversial break from church law. In his speech, Kenny drew a line in the sand in regards to Ireland's traditional status as a loyal Catholic state: "This is the Republic of Ireland 2011. A republic of laws, of rights and responsibilities; of proper civic order; where the delinquency and arrogance of a particular version, of a particular kind of "morality," will no longer be tolerated or ignored."

The Church's influence is still visible in Ireland, where abortion is illegal and the Church runs most schools. "The Vatican will have been taken aback by Ireland's defiance after centuries of being politically deferential towards the Church," says theologian Gina Menzies. "The idea that Ireland is a republic beholden to no faith is a departure for a country in which introducing contraception and divorce were difficult," she says. (See why Ireland is running out of priests.)

Kenny has been widely hailed for his speech; he told reporters on Sunday that he had received thousands of messages of support and was "astounded" by the number of clergy who told him it was "about time." Campaigner and former abuse victim Andrew Madden welcomes the change from the attitudes of previous governments, which he says were "way out of step not just with victims but with wider public opinion."

Indeed, Kenny's attack carries more weight for ordinary Irish Catholics because he leads the traditionally staunchly Catholic party Fine Gael. "It was not an anti-Catholic speech, but was pro-children and pro-Ireland," Madden says. "The fact that his speech will probably not lose Kenny a single vote - but will most likely gain him some - is a sign of a shift from excessive deference in political circles and wider culture," Says Michael Kelly, deputy editor of the Irish Catholic newspaper. Thanks to more than a decade of horrific abuse scandals, the Vatican's power over ordinary Irish Catholics has grown weaker and weaker. "There has been an absolute loss of moral authority for the Church, and Catholics will increasingly privatize their faith - keeping their distance from and not looking to the hierarchy as previous generations did," Kelly says. (See why the Pope's apology may not be enough.)

The current row formalizes the rapid separation of state policies and church teachings in this once staunchly Catholic nation - which this year has seen the start of same-sex civil partnerships despite condemnation of homosexuality by the Vatican. And the government is already making moves to remove the last pillar of church power: education. The Catholic Church runs 90% of elementary schools and most high schools in Ireland - giving the Church day- to-day powers such as controlling school boards, approving hiring of teachers, and insisting on the teaching of Catholic doctrine in classrooms. Now the rupturing of relations between Ireland and the Vatican strengthens the hand of the Minister for Education, who wants half of the country's Catholic elementary schools transferred to non-religious management. The State may also get ownership of some church school lands in a deal over compensation to abuse victims. "A change in school patronage is important, even if no priest ever abused a child," says abuse victim Madden. "Parents have a right to a choice." (Read about whether the papacy is Europe is damaged.)

Madden does not expect any radical shift in policy from the Vatican when it gives its response to the child sex-abuse report in August, only a continued "complete failure to take responsibility." The Vatican is expected to send its ambassador back to Dublin later this summer, but that will not signal the return of the status quo. No matter what response the Church gives to the child-abuse report, one thing is clear: the days of the Vatican's undue influence over the Irish are over.

See pictures of the Vatican trying to find rapprochement with the world's Jews.

Electrical and Mechanical Safety Problems in Home Improvement ...

Downtime in many industries is mainly caused by people getting harmed while working. In industries based on physical work and maintenance this is even more of a concern. Large investments have been made in studying and researching safety systems. This is due to the fact that it makes financial sense for companies to reduce the number of accidents that occur. Home improvement projects are also subject to the same safety concerns. Since you are responsible for at least half of the money coming into your home, you shouldn?t put yourself in jeopardy. You don?t want to get hurt, either.

Power equipment is designed with many safety features. Cutting and grinding power tools have one such feature, which is a safety guard. Never remove the guards for convenience?s sake or speed. Due to all the debris, you could end up easily hurting a hand, your face or your eyes. You should also always wear a pair of protection glasses. You should also always wear leather gloves, along with protection glasses, to keep your hands from getting hurt. This isn?t hard to remember and is basic common sense. However, there are still quite a few people who think they know better and ignore these tips and then end up getting injured.

Here?s a simple but effective suggestion if you are working on something that requires you to hammer nails. This suggestion is essential for people who lack experience in working with hammers. You should construct or buy something you can use to hold the nail steady when you are hammering it. A paperclip can easily be converted into a nail holder. Combs can also be used as nail holders and all you need to do is remove one or two teeth. Understanding the level of pain involved in hammering a thumb or a finger is difficult until you experience it yourself.

If you want to make a dated room look fresh and new, paint the walls! Painting is one of the cheapest home improvement jobs you can do. Not everyone enjoys painting. If you aren?t thrilled with the idea, just think of it as a necessary part of being a home owner. Protect yourself against paint fumes, especially when working in smaller rooms. When working in a smaller room or areas without good ventilation, always use a painter?s mask. For anyone sensitive to fumes or with respiratory issues, get a better mask such as a filtering mask. A mask like this will have replaceable cartridges. Eye protections is another concern. The very nature of paint makes it prone to splatter. A cheap pair of safety glasses is really all that is need to protect the eyes from paint splatter. Shop for safety goggles at your favorite hardware supply.

You will find it rewarding and satisfying when you work on a home improvement project. Let?s say you build a home entertainment center, you will then be able to point to it and say that you made it which is very satisfying. Taking safety precautions, though, is essential to avoid injury. This information was brought to you by http://www.grantsforstayathomemoms.com, your source for all things related on grants for stay at home moms.

Wealth gap widens between whites, minorities (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The wealth gaps between whites and minorities have grown to their widest levels in a quarter-century. The recession and uneven recovery have erased decades of minority gains, leaving whites on average with 20 times the net worth of blacks and 18 times that of Hispanics, according to an analysis of new Census data.

The analysis shows the racial and ethnic impact of the economic meltdown, which ravaged housing values and sent unemployment soaring. It offers the most direct government evidence yet of the disparity between predominantly younger minorities whose main asset is their home and older whites who are more likely to have 401(k) retirement accounts or other stock holdings.

"What's pushing the wealth of whites is the rebound in the stock market and corporate savings, while younger Hispanics and African-Americans who bought homes in the last decade ? because that was the American dream ? are seeing big declines," said Timothy Smeeding, a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor who specializes in income inequality.

The median wealth of white U.S. households in 2009 was $113,149, compared with $6,325 for Hispanics and $5,677 for blacks, according to the analysis released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center. Those ratios, roughly 20 to 1 for blacks and 18 to 1 for Hispanics, far exceed the low mark of 7 to 1 for both groups reached in 1995, when the nation's economic expansion lifted many low-income groups to the middle class.

The white-black wealth gap is also the widest since the census began tracking such data in 1984, when the ratio was roughly 12 to 1.

"I am afraid that this pushes us back to what the Kerner Commission characterized as `two societies, separate and unequal,'" said Roderick Harrison, a former chief of racial statistics at the Census Bureau, referring to the 1960s presidential commission that examined U.S. race relations. "The great difference is that the second society has now become both black and Hispanic."

Stock holdings play an important role in the economic well-being of white households. Stock funds, IRA and Keogh accounts as well as 401(k) and savings accounts were responsible for 28 percent of whites' net worth, compared with 19 percent for blacks and 15 percent for Hispanics.

According to the Pew study, the housing boom of the early to mid-2000s boosted the wealth of Hispanics in particular, who were disproportionately employed in the thriving construction industry. Hispanics also were more likely to live and buy homes in states such as California, Florida, Nevada and Arizona, which were in the forefront of the real estate bubble, enjoying early gains in home values.

But those gains quickly shriveled in the housing bust. After reaching a median wealth of $18,359 in 2005, the wealth of Hispanics ? who derived nearly two-thirds of their net worth from home equity ? declined by 66 percent by 2009. Among blacks, who now have the highest unemployment rate at 16.2 percent, their household wealth fell 53 percent from $12,124 to $5,677.

In contrast, the median household wealth of whites dipped a modest 16 percent from $134,992 to $113,149, cushioned in part by a stock market recovery that began in mid-2009.

"The findings are a reminder ? if one was needed ? of what a large share of blacks and Hispanics live on the economic margins," said Paul Taylor, director of Pew Social & Demographic Trends. "When the economy tanked, they're the groups that took the heaviest blows."

The latest data come as President Barack Obama and congressional leaders try to reach a deal to avoid a U.S. default on its financial obligations after Aug. 2. Democrats and Republicans have been wrangling over proposals that could cut trillions of dollars from programs such as Medicare and Social Security; they are divided over whether to bring in new tax revenue, such as by closing corporate tax loopholes or increasing taxes for the wealthy.

The NAACP and other black groups urged Obama to resist deep cuts to housing assistance or safety net programs, saying it would disproportionately hurt urban areas with high poverty and unemployment. The U.S. poverty rate currently stands at 14.3 percent, with the ranks of the working-age poor at the highest level since the 1960s. Some analysts believe the poverty rate will climb higher when new figures are released in September.

"Typically in recessions, minorities suffer from being last hired and first fired. They are likely to lose jobs more rapidly at the beginning of the recession, and are far slower to gain jobs as the economy recovers," said Harrison, who is now a sociologist at Howard University. "One suspects that blacks who lost jobs in the recession, or who have tried to help family members or relatives who did, have now spent whatever savings or other cashable assets they had."

Other findings:

_About 35 percent of black households and 31 percent of Hispanic households had zero or negative net worth in 2009, compared with 15 percent of white households. In 2005, the comparable shares were 29 percent for blacks, 23 percent for Hispanics and 11 percent for whites.

_Asians lost their top ranking to whites in median household wealth, dropping from $168,103 in 2005 to $78,066 in 2009. Like Hispanics, many Asians were concentrated in states like California hit hard by the housing downturn. More recent arrivals of new Asian immigrants, who tend to be poor, also pushed down their median wealth.

_Across all race and ethnic groups, the wealth gap between rich and poor widened. The share of wealth held by the top 10 percent of U.S. households increased from 49 percent in 2005 to 56 percent in 2009. The threshold for entry into the wealthiest top 10 percent, however, dipped lower: from $646,327 in 2005 to $598,435.

The numbers are based on the Census Bureau's Survey of Income and Program Participation, which sampled more than 36,000 households on wealth from September-December 2009. Census first began publishing wealth data from this survey, broken down by race and ethnicity, in 1984.

Documents required for availing car finance in Australia - Thezman ...

The boom in the car sales is taken to be an indicator of the increasing riches of the people. Besides the increasing economic prosperity of the people, the other most important reason for the increase in the sale of cars is due to the easy availability of the car finance in very affordable monthly instalment. Even the down payment amounts may not be required or it might be quite less. The people, therefore, prefer taking the car loan rather than making the full payment in one go.

You are only required to carry some documents in support of your incomes and the identity and some amounts to make the down payment while taking the car loan. Every car manufacturer nowadays has arrangement with the car finance companies and banks to provide the loans to the prospective customers with ease.

The list of documents required for getting the loan are the following:

1. Income proof: It is quite natural to expect the car lease companies to ask for your income proof since they would like to know whether they will be able to pay the monthly instalment or not. This income proof can be furnished in the form of some salary slips, bank statements or the financial statements of the company.

2. Address Proof: The car lease company would like to know where it? car is being taken or where the owner of the car resides. For that purpose some address proof is required as well. The driving license or the passport copy can be given as a proof of the address to the company.

3. Property ownership proof: This is required to be given only by those people who own a property of their own.

4. Insurance copy: The car finance company would be giving the car only if it is duly and comprehensively insured.

5. Roadworthiness certificate: This certificate tells whether the cars are fit for being on the roads on not.

6. Photographs of the vehicle with the number plate and vehicle body.

7. Proof of the bank account details of the seller.

If you are an employed person, you can take the novated car lease wherein your instalment gets reduced from the salary that you are taking. On changing the employment, the person must check whether the new employer can provide the novated lease facility or not. Similarly, there are a few other types of car leases.

With increasing sales of cars, there have been problems of urbanization like jams, pollution in almost all the major cities of the world. Some people have mooted the rise in the government taxes and insurance rates to make the car finance dearer and to maintain the sales of the cars at sustainable levels. Some others are even calling for a putting a limit on the total car production and starting of a quota system of production for the cars. These suggestions have been discounted for one reason or the other, and the car loan companies have been doing brisk business.

Israeli/Washington Peace Process Rejectionism

Israeli/Washington Peace Process Rejectionism - by Stephen Lendman

Pretending to restart Israeli/Palestinian peace talks, Quartet representatives met in Washington on July 11. Attending were Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and former UK Prime Minister/reinvented war criminal/current Middle East envoy Tony Blair.

Ahead of talks, Clinton and Ashton expressed determination to overcome previously unresolved issues.

On July 12, an unidentified senior US official called the meeting an "excellent and serious discussion on the next steps. (Representatives) expressed support for (Obama's) May Middle East speech and called to start preparatory phases of talks without any preconditions."

However, "(t)here are still gaps, and they need to be closed before the Quartet can go forward with public statements."

In fact, chasms define still unresolved issues. More on that below.

On July 12, Haaretz writer Barak Ravid headlined, "Israel and Palestinian sources to Haaretz: US peace efforts have failed," saying:

Intensive US strong-arming failed. America "was unable to find a formula that (all) parties could accept." Manipulative Washington demands were unacceptable. Netanyahu blamed Palestinians for the impasse.

Last January's Palestine Papers revealed that Obama rejected unacceptable Bush era two state solution "Road Map" terms, effectively accepting settlements as Israeli territory. Or did he?

On September 23, 2009, he told the UN General Assembly he supported "(t)wo states living side by side in peace and security - a Jewish state of Israel, with true security for all Israelis; and a viable, independent Palestinian state with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967, and realizes the potential of the Palestinian people."

However, on October 21, 2009, Obama's Special Middle East Envoy George Mitchell said:

"The US believes that through good faith negotiations, the parties can mutually agree on an outcome that achieves both the Palestinian goal of an independent and viable state encompassing all the territory occupied in 1967 or its equivalent in value, and the Israeli goal of secure and recognized borders that reflect subsequent developments and meets Israeli security requirements."

He meant an independent Palestine would include 6,258 square km, the equivalent of Gaza and the West Bank. However, he suggested land swaps as part of the deal, replacing a two state solution with an ethnically pure Jewish state (excluding Israeli Arabs) and an unacceptable rump Palestine.

In November 2007, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said:

"Israel (is) the state of the Jewish people - and I would like to emphasize the meaning of 'its people' is the Jewish people - with Jerusalem the united and undivided capital of Israel and of the Jewish people for 3,007 years."

In other words, Israeli Arabs aren't wanted. Either leave or be expelled. Only Jews may be citizens. UN Resolution 194 granting Palestinian refugees the right of return is rejected.

In September 2009, Israeli Foreign Minister/Deputy Prime Minister Avigdor Lieberman endorsed ethnic cleansing, saying:

"A final agreement between Israel and the Palestinians has to be based on a program of exchange of territory and populations."

On July 17, the Jerusalem Media & Communication Centre headlined, "Report: US sought Quartet approval for Bush-era settlement assurances." However, EU and Russia representatives rejected the scheme, saying:

"Senior European diplomats said that the failure of the Quartet meeting pushed the Palestinians even more toward turning to the UN" for independent sovereign state recognition and full status de jure recognition.

American intransigence is responsible, proposing "one-sided wording for an announcement that favored Israel and which had no chance of being accepted by the Palestinians."

Senior European sources said:

"The Israelis pressured the US very heavily and the American wording was too blatant and unbalanced."

It called for land swaps, settlements annexed by Israel, and disapproval of Palestinian General Assembly efforts for full status de jure recognition in September. Ashton and Lavrov rejected US language stating:

"Permanent peace means two states for two people (not a two state solution): Israel as a Jewish state and a homeland for the Jewish people and the state of Palestine as homeland for the Palestinian people and each state enjoys self determination and mutual recognition and peace."

Washington rejected General Assembly sovereign state recognition, saying it must be resolved through Israeli/Palestinian negotiations, "tak(ing) into consideration the changes that occurred in the past 44 years, including the new demographic facts on the ground and the needs of both sides."

In other words, settlements (exceeding 40% of the West Bank and East Jerusalem) belong to Israel. Unstated but also perhaps expelling Israeli Arabs to make Israel ethnically pure, and demanding Palestinians recognize it as a Jewish state. In return, Palestinians get virtually nothing, except nominal recognition on land unfit for statehood.

That's how America and Israel negotiate. It's why peace negotiations were stillborn from inception, a worthless exercise because both countries reject it. As a result, how can Palestinians negotiate without a willing partner.

In fact, former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir (1983 - 1984 and 1986 - 1992) admitted it, saying he wanted talks to drag on for years so Israel could expropriate Palestinian land to expand settlements, a policy still in place. Moreover, Prime Minister Netanyahu once called the peace process "a waste of time," laying down take it or leave it demands like Yitzhak Rabin's Oslo Accords.

Since the mid-1970s, talks proved more pretense than peace, especially since 2006 with Palestine's legitimate government excluded from negotiations, spuriously called a terrorist organization and held hostage under siege.

That's where things now stand, why Palestinians must get de jure General Assembly recognition, then seek international condemnation of Israel's illegal occupation of a sovereign state, demanding it end.

A Final Comment

Sailing for Gaza, Israeli naval vessels surrounded Freedom Flotilla II boat Dignite al Karama in international waters.

Blocking the small yacht were "three battle ships and seven commando boats of different sizes (with) at least 150 soldiers", according to Haaretz journalist Amira Hass on board.

Carrying 13 activists, including herself, and three crew members, it pressed on. Israel threatened to attack.

Around mid-morning on July 19, Israeli Radio (Reshet Bet) said naval forces controlled the boat with no clashes, and that it would be towed to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Aharonoth said IDF chief Benny Gantz ordered naval forces to take over the vessel, "after the activists refused to alter the route of the ship to Ashdod." Prior to intercepting it, it was heading toward "an area that is under a maritime siege."

Activists were told to choose between (interrogations and) deportation or imprisonment. Earlier, Flotilla spokesperson Thomas Sommer-Houdeville said the boat carried a message of peace, hope and solidarity with besieged Gazans.

Hass said its "participants regard themselves as representatives of the entire (blocked Flotilla), and are determined to exhaust all possibilities (to) reach (Gaza), or at least carry out the symbolic act of protesting the blockade."

They understand the risks but took them anyway, challenging Israeli viciousness unarmed in peace.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon accused passengers of "a provocative act." Haaretz said Prime Minister Netanyahu and Defense Secretary Ehud Barak congratulated naval forces for successfully intercepting the boat.

Elite Shayetet 13 commandos boarded it, Hamas spokesman Ismail Rudwan calling it "piracy, a war crime and a violation of the principles of human rights."

Israel's lawlessness, in fact, gave humanitarian activists another victory. By winning battles, Israel lost the war, exposing itself as a rogue terror state, shooting itself in the foot with each criminal act.

Hero Chihuahua Scares Off Two Armed Robbers

A tiny chihuahua became a crime-fighting hero on July 7 when he chased off two armed robbers from a Southern California cigar store.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department released this surveillance footage from the Ace Smoke Shop in Altadena that shows two masked men entering the establishment with a rifle and a backpack. At first the robbers demand money from store owner Eric Knight, who starts putting cash in the backpack offscreen.

They're interrupted by the store owner's dog, who begins barking ferociously at the armed robbers. Flustered, the two men grab the back pack and run away, but not before pointing the rifle at both the cashier and the dog.

Knight told ABC 7 that his dog, Paco, has been with him for five years ever since Knight rescued him from a shelter. "I'm going to put a cape on him I think," said Knight.

The two men got away with about $200 but no one was hurt, reports CNN.

In this longer version of the security footage, Knight is seen exiting the store to look for his dog. Paco returned shortly, tail wagging.

Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to contact the police. From the LA County Sheriff's Department:

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Altadena Sheriff's Station Detective Brett Binder, (626) 296-2114 and reference Case# 911-01838-0773-034. With Debt Talks Stalled, Democrats Try to Divide and Conquer the GOP (Time.com)

A day after a testy exchange between Barack Obama and Eric Cantor capped debt-limit negotiations at the White House, Democrats launched a coordinated attack against the House Majority Leader, portraying him as a primary obstacle to ongoing effort to reach a deal to raise the U.S.'s borrowing authority by the August 2 deadline.

"Eric Cantor has shown he shouldn't be at the table, and Republicans agree he shouldn't be at the table," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on Thursday morning in a withering speech that called Cantor "childish" and suggested his hard-line haggling was a ploy to solidify his political capital with the House GOP's Tea Party wing. Speaking on the Senate floor, Reid cited a Politico report that quoted an unnamed Republican saying Cantor was adopting a posture designed to further his personal ambitions. "He's all about Eric," the lawmaker reportedly said. (See "Inside Thursday's White House Debt Ceiling Meeting: A Consensus to Go Big.")

Of the group of negotiators meeting daily to hammer out a debt-ceiling deal, "there's really only one person who has not made any concessions," Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer said at a press conference in the Capitol. "It can't just be Eric Cantor deciding everything. If Eric Cantor decides everything, I fear we'll be in default."

And in a separate press conference, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, in a light, weary tone that suggested the negotiations had devolved into a farce, praised Obama for bearing with Republicans. "The President has more patience than Job," Pelosi said, brandishing a penny as a theatrical nod to Republicans' refusal to consider even a scintilla of new taxes. Without mentioning him by name, Pelosi tore into Cantor for claiming the President left Wednesday night's meeting in a huff, saying Cantor failed to grasp Oval Office protocol. "That's how meetings with Presidents end," Pelosi said. "You don't leave first. The President leaves first. So that was completely appropriate, unless somebody in the room thought that he or she should have the last word."

While they lambasted Cantor, Democrats heaped praise on other Republican negotiators, including House Speaker John Boehner, who supported a sweeping bargain that would lop some $4 trillion from the federal deficit and overhaul the tax code, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who floated a proposal that would give Obama the authority to raise the debt limit in three increments while Congress casts corresponding protest votes against the hikes. By training the spotlight on Cantor, Democrats are hoping to open fissures between Boehner and Cantor, as well as create a juxtaposition - the pragmatic President and the intractable Tea Party proxy - that they believe will resonate with the public. (See "Accept McConnell's Debt Ceiling Deal.")

At a press conference to tout their balanced-budget amendment scheduled to hit the floor next week, Republican leaders played up the buddy-buddy bonhomie, in a wink at the proliferation of reports suggesting a frost behind the scenes. "The Speaker and I have consistently been on the same page," Cantor said. In a camera-friendly photo-op, Boehner joined Cantor at the podium, hooking an arm around his lieutenant to stress the strength of their partnership. "Any suggestion that the role that Eric has played in these meetings has been anything less than helpful is just wrong. We're in the foxhole," Boehner said. "I'm glad Eric's there."

Cantor's aides say Democrats are painting a caricature that belies the significant concessions Cantor has made during the nine weeks he's been engaged in high-level talks, first in the Biden-led negotiations - which Cantor left after a row over tax increases - and now at Obama's daily confabs. "At the beginning of the Biden talks, both sides made the decision to focus on areas of commonality instead of areas where there were no agreements, such as repealing ObamaCare for the Democrats and raising taxes for the Republicans. In that context, Leader Cantor and the other participants identified more than $2 trillion in spending cuts that were on the table for both parties," Cantor spokeswoman Laena Fallon said in a statement to TIME. "In the spirit of compromise, those cuts weren't exactly what either side would pick."

Without a clear path to find the $2.4 trillion in spending cuts that would meet Republicans' dollar-for-dollar ultimatum, Democrats may be hoping that battering Cantor will force Republicans leery of the damage a default would inflict to put a different leader at the helm of the negotiations. It's unclear whether the strategy will work. Several House Republican aides say that the conference remains unified in its three ironclad demands for the deal: no new taxes, spending cuts commensurate with the increase in the debt-limit, and caps and controls on future spending. Rumors of a leadership rift, they say, are overblown, even if more moderate members have grumbled about Cantor's approach. "Anytime Boehner or Cantor and the President get into a tussle, it hardens our resolve," says a House GOP aide. (See "No Grand Bargain: Boehner Walks Away From Big Deficit Deal.")

Nor have some members appreciated the barbs Democrats have hurled at Cantor. Asked about Democrats' potshots, GOP Representative Allen West told TIME, "I could sit here and say the President was pretty much a petulant, immature child as well."

Tea Party freshmen like West don't have a seat at the bargaining table. But they do have a presence in the room. Cantor has said his insistence on a revenue-neutral deal reflects the will of his members. By dangling their reluctance to strike a deal, Cantor can try to force Democrats to capitulate rather than usher in the chain of grim consequences that would accompany default. "There is a dose of pragmatism in all that we do," he said Thursday afternoon. "We are not yet at 218," the narrowest majority in the House of Representatives.

For their part, Democrats question whether Cantor is defining reality or creating one that aligns with his own goals. "He's trying to make the reality that some packages can't pass the House," Schumer said. "He's not just representing it, he's making it." But Republican aides say he and Boehner are "sincere" about their whip count.

A Democratic source said Cantor was silent at Thursday's negotiating session, at which Obama told Congressional leaders that he expects them to pinpoint a path forward over the next 24 to 36 hours, according to a Republican aide familiar with the substance of the meeting. If they're unable to do so, the President suggested another meeting could be called over the weekend, during which time Obama and his staff would be "on call," the GOP aide said.

By that time, the group may have moved to a back-up plan. A model based on McConnell's framework is one possibility, and Boehner said Thursday that measure is "worth keeping on the table." Republicans will meet Friday morning to discuss their options. Both Boehner and Pelosi have pushed back on rumors that Obama would shift the talks over the weekend to the presidential retreat at Camp David in hopes that a change of scenery might help break the impasse. It's unlikely that the partisan deadlock would simply crumble in the Maryland mountains, but something has to break the logjam. Lawmakers are running out of time.
