Inmates file suit, blame alcohol for their crimes

Five Idaho inmates have filed a lawsuit against eight beer, wine and liquor companies claiming alcohol is responsible for them being sent to prison.
Keith Allen Brown, Steven Thompson, Woodrow Grant, Cory Baugh and Jeremy Brown have filed a joint lawsuit in the amount of $1 billion dollars. In the suit, which was filed in the Boise?s U.S. District Court last month, the inmates contend that alcohol is responsible for their criminal behavior, and that they should have been warned that the beverages can be addictive. In their affidavit they state:

"{The plaintiffs} have done actions which have caused them to become incarcerated for a great portion of their lives. The plaintiffs claim if they had not been addicted to the products sold by the defendants that they would have lead normal lives as productive members of society."

The five inmates, who are being held at the Idaho State Correctional Institution just outside of Boise, are incarcerated on charges ranging from manslaughter and aggravated assault, to grand theft and drug possession. Thirty-four-year-old Jeremy Brown is serving a 20 to 30-year sentence for shooting a man in 2011. In his affidavit, Brown says:

?If I was not an alcoholic, the shooting would never have happened. I have spent a great deal of that time in prison because of situations that have arose because of people being drunk. At no time in my life, prior to me becoming an alcoholic, was I ever informed that alcohol was habit forming and addictive.?

Grant, a 27-year-old man serving a maximum of 7-years for drug and aggravated battery offenses, said:

"I fear the day I am released from prison. I do not know if I can be a productive member of society and still control the desires and craving to use alcohol.?

The inmates, who are still seeking an attorney willing to represent them, have filed the lawsuit on their own. Joe Filicetti, a Boise attorney told WIVI:

?If you put these guys through depositions and you ask them ?What do you know about alcohol?? I think it?s pretty common knowledge that it?s addictive. It?s well known to be something that causes you to reduce your inhibitions and to do things you otherwise wouldn't do.?

According to WFMY, the inmates named Miller Brewing Company, Anheuser-Busch Co., Adolph Coors Co., Brown-Furman Co., American Brands Inc., Pepsi-Cola, RJR Nabisco, Gallo's Winery, Ernest Gallo and Julio Gallo as defendants in the lawsuit.
