Q&A: Making the Mac Take Dictation - NYTimes.com

Q.

Sometimes when I type on my Mac, a little purple microphone appears on screen. What is this?

A.

The OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) system for the Mac includes a dictation feature that allows you to speak the text you would like to enter instead of typing it out. If the purple dictation microphone is popping up out of nowhere, you may be accidentally hitting the keyboard shortcut for turning it on.

Pressing the Function key twice is one of the default shortcuts. If you do not plan to use the dictation feature, you can turn it off in the System Preferences area as explained on Apple?s Dictation information page. The page also explains how to properly use the feature if dictating your text appeals to you.
