SOUTH African immigrant Marita Basson enjoys being able to walk safely through Toowoomba's parks - a small luxury her family did not have in their home country.

Mrs Basson, 51, her husband Manus and their son Johan, 21, emigrated to the Garden City in 2008.

The family joined 38 other people to receive their Australian citizenship certificates during a ceremony at the Empire Church Theatre yesterday.

Mrs Basson's sister and her family moved from South Africa to Toowoomba six months before the Bassons and urged them to make the life change.

The family has not looked back since.

"The people here are so friendly," Mrs Basson said.

"Toowoomba is a beautiful place and it is the safe lifestyle that appeals to us.

"We like to be able to go for a walk in the park and walk in the street."

Mrs Basson is an urban design and planning lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland.

"I love working for the university," she said.

Her son is in his third year of a mechanical engineering degree at USQ.

"There are a lot more opportunities for younger people in Australia," she said.
