Patrick Gudauskas and Dusty Payne cause couple of Round 1 upsets at O?Neill Coldwater Classic

America?s Patrick Gudauskas and Hawaii?s Dusty Payne were responsible for a couple of huge upsets featured in the opening round of the O?Neill Coldwater Classic, the ninth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which got underway at Santa Cruz in California, America, on Thursday, November 1, 2012.

Gudauskas got the better of Brazil?s Heitor Alves and more importantly Hawaii?s John John Florence in the third heat of Round 1, earning his place in the third round while relegating his two rivals to Round 2.

The fourth heat saw Payne claim victory over Australia?s Mick Fanning and Kieren Perrow, forcing both his rivals to take a trip of Round 2 while advancing straight to Round 3 himself.

The opening day of the latest elite tour event saw the point-break of Steamer Lane getting graced with shifting two-to-four foot waves, which seemed like an ideal stage for the battles between the best surfers from around the globe to take on.

Gudauskas, who had not been in the best of forms during the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, found himself pitted against Alves and Florence, currently fourth on the ASP World Title rankings.

Despite having his work cut out for him, the American surfer made the most of his local knowledge of the waves to walk away with the win after earning a 5.83 and 7.33 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 13.16 points.

Alves scored a 4.63 and 8.33 off his best-two waves to eventually register a heat-total of 12.96 points, which forced him to settle for second place.

Florence, who had been in a formidable form throughout the year, failed to get off to the sort of start that he was looking for and found himself getting relegated to Round 2 after scoring a 4.93 and 2.07 off his top-two business-waves for a heat-total of 7.00 points.

The fourth heat saw Payne earn credit for the second huge upset of the day by getting the better of former two-time ASP World Champion Fanning, while also defeating Perrow to secure his place in Round 3.

The Hawaiian surfer got off to an excellent start, earning a 6.83 off his first business-wave and backed it up with an 8.47-point ride, thus getting to what proved to be a decisive two-wave total of 15.30 points.

Fanning created a chance for himself to take the win after earning an 8.17 off his first business-wave halfway through the heat, but managed to back it up with an inadequate 6.77, thus having to settle for second place with a heat-total of 14.94 points instead.

Perrow finished third with a heat-total of 12.93 points, which comprised of a 5.93 and 7.00-point ride, consequently getting relegated to Round 2 as well.
