Zumba Fitness. The YMCA?s Zumbathon will be held Oct. 14 at Manna Church on Cliffdale Road from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The event is $20, and will give participants ages 13 and up a chance to Zumba with Perodeau and other instructors. Zumba is a dance-based exercise that has its roots in Latin-based music and movement. It was developed by a fitness instructor in Colombia in the mid-1990s, and trademarked in the U.S. in 2001. But Koni Perodeau, the Y?s health and wellness coordinator and Zumba instructor, says the exercise has grown to offer something for everyone. "Zumba is like exercise in disguise," Perodeau says. "Anybody can do it. It?s brought a lot of people to the fitness industry." Perodeau has been teaching Zumba classes at the Fayetteville YMCA for about a year. The Y offers classes for kids, adults and seniors in both Zumba and Aqua Zumba. Perodeau has also instructed Zumba to participants in wheelchairs. "There are no limits with Zumba," she says. "People don?t want to work out, right? But people hear music and they want to move. I?ve been giving a class, and people heard the music in the parking lot. They came in and joined the class." Trey Wright is the YMCA?s youth sports director, and he?s hoping the Zumbathon will attract people of all ages. "This is a fundraising event for us," Wright says. "But it?s really a way to get people active through non-traditional fitness." Funds raised through the Zumbathon will go toward providing free swim lessons at the Y for families who have financial hardship. Perodeau says the goal is to be able to provide 500 free lessons. People who are interested in participating in Zumbathon can contact Perodeau at 724-4320. Register in advance at ymcaofthesandhills.org, or on the night of the event starting at 5:30 p.m. at Manna Church. And for people who might prefer music outside of the Latin genre, Perodeau says she uses a variety from Latin to Hip Hop and International music, to lead her Zumba classes. "I use about 45 different influences," she says. "And it?s not about getting the choreography right. It?s just about inspiring people to move."
