If you have ever found it hard to get, or stay, on track, it could be that you just were not motivated in the first place. And a lack of motivation leads to poor productivity. This is because without a keen interest or drive to do whatever you are doing, it is hard to keep doing it. As motivation flags, productivity falls. However if you work on your self discipline, then you can become productive even if you don't feel very inspired! In time, this will help to get your life on track and running like clockwork.
Discipline is self control or self restraint. It is doing what needs doing, when it needs to be done. Discipline is what stops your life falling apart. After all, without it, you could get up at any time and be late for work every day. Or you could only get half of your chores done before picking the kids up. And you would overspend every month if you never kept to a household budget. Whether you use it efficiently or not, we all have some discipline.
The trick is to harness it to become more productive.
Goal setting is one way to create self discipline and get motivated. But it can be too hard to stay motivated for some. Plenty of folks find they need some sort of external encouragement to stay on track and if this is you, then join a support network or whatever works for you. In the meantime, here are a few tricks you can use to help you improve your motivation and self discipline.
Focus on reward not process.
With every task or chore you do, take time to remind yourself why this task is crucial and what the end result will be. If you don't complete every step required to achieve your goal, you will never reach your goal. So if you are writing an ebook, remind yourself that you cannot make any sales until it is completed. Maybe you want to be a published author? You will be an author when your book is written, but not until. And every chapter written gets you closer to your goal. The same is true if you are looking for the motivation to lose weight, change job or anything at all.
Stay disciplined. Do a little every day and at the end of a week, month or year you will be surprised how far you will have come.
Look at the big picture.
It definitely helps to break big tasks down into small steps when you want to get motivated quickly. But remember each task is only one small cog in a larger wheel. If you find it difficult to get inspired by the small task you are working on at present, take a moment to step back and see where it fits into the larger picture of what you are trying to achieve. For instance, promoting your website may encompass lots of tasks which you personally find boring. Of you cannot afford to outsource them, then focus on the end result; the increase in traffic flowing to your website.
Do the one thing you don't want to right now.
Like everything, discipline gets better with practise. Get into the habit of doing what you should be doing, when you should be doing it. Push yourself to do the things you have to do! As you finish each task, you will develop stronger and stronger self discipline. Eventually your discipline will be so good that your productivity will soar, which will make you feel more motivated, increase your self esteem and improve your self discipline still further.
You can do it. Productivity, motivation, self discipline and self esteem are closely linked. Work on your discipline and the your motivation and everything else, will follow.
