A Gist about Cycles and History of Its Evolution Over Time ...

Cycling is one of the interesting aspects in the modern world. The first thing most of us would learn on wheels is cycling. May be it is a tri-cycle or bicycle. Most of us started with cycles. The other day I was browsing through my internet about cycles and something went wrong with my computer. Cycling is one of my favorite subjects and I got quite disturbed when had faced problem in my system. Immediately I had to call for pc help. Within the next twenty minutes I got the problem resolved.

I remember the day I went along with five of my friends cycling. Those days we had only ordinary cycles therefore it was quite hard to cycle up hill. However, we used to have a very good time cycling down the stairs, we used go along the streams and so on. One such day we went to a usual place. This place was about two miles away from my home. Although we had a normal road to ride, we felt it adventurous to ride through the shortcuts. These shortcuts were not an easy way to ride on a bicycle. Our main challenge was to ride the entire way without keep our foot down. At one place there was a huge boulder and we had to cross the boulder without getting out. Four of succeeded doing it while one failed. Those days were quite interesting and most memorable ones.

I was reminded about this incident while talking about bicycles. The wheel is the crucial element of a bicycle. It allows the rider to roll over the ground with great speed and efficiency. The initial two wheelers started with making of carts and chariots. These were pulled by animals. However, during the nineteen century, wheels were manufactured through advanced materials and wheels were used as human powered machines. The modern bicycles have wheels made of steel frame, a chain drive, steel wheels and spokes and pneumatic tires.

When we look back into the 1800?s bicycles were high wheelers. These also had names like ordinary and extra-ordinary. In England it was known as ?Penny Farthings? and this depicted one of the coins in those days. The pedal of these cycles was attached directly to the front wheel, like the ones we have on a tri-cycle. The front wheel was large and the cycle would move along its rotation. These cycles were quite hard to pedal as the wheels were heavy especially going uphill, however, it picked up a great speed on flat surfaces. Even though these cycles were efficient then, the rider was placed much higher than the wheel, it was quite dangerous when he lost control. These higher were also quite risky while riding in rough surfaces. A slight obstacle would lead to a fall. These cycles even though were meant for speed, failed to maintain the safety aspect. The chain drive came up much later and the both the wheels were made of equal size.

The chain drive came up with gears at later point of time which helped to ride up hill as well easily. However, the chain drive with gears proved to be efficient with good braking system on flat surfaces and downhill. On the old high-wheelers, the pedals were attached directly to the wheel. One turn of the pedals equaled one turn of the wheel. Gears allow the cyclist to change that ratio. For steep hills, we choose a gear that lets us turn the pedals many times to turn the wheel just once; on flats or downhill, we might choose a gear that turns the wheel many times for each turn of the pedals. Today, we can cycle to quite a long distance with much struggle.
