JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Chimpanzees at a sanctuary founded by famed primatologist Jane Goodall pulled a Texas graduate student into their fenced-off enclosure, dragging him nearly a half-mile and biting his ear and hands.

Andrew F. Oberle was giving a lecture to a group of tourists at the Chimp Eden sanctuary on Thursday when two chimpanzees grabbed his feet and pulled him under a fence into their enclosure, said Jeffrey Wicks of the Netcare911 emergency services company.

The 26-year-old anthropology student at the University of Texas at San Antonio suffered "multiple and severe bite wounds," Wicks said.

He was in critical condition Friday after undergoing surgery at the Mediclinic hospital in Nelspruit, 180 miles (300 kilometers) from Johannesburg, hospital officials said.

Oberle, who was doing research at the sanctuary, had crossed the first of two fences separating the chimpanzees from visitors and was standing close to the second fence, which is electrified, at the time of the attack, said Edwin Jay, chairman of the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa.

The sanctuary was temporarily closed after the attack, said David Oosthuizen, the institute's executive director.

"The safety of our visitors and staff is paramount," he said. "We have never had an incident like this, and we have closed the sanctuary to investigate how we can ensure it will not happen again."

Oberle lost part of an ear and parts of his fingers in the attack, according to the South African newspaper Beeld. The sanctuary's manager, Eugene Cussons, fired into the air to scare the chimps away from Oberle, then chased them back into their enclosure. Cussons is the host of Animal Planet's "Escape to Chimp Eden."

Oberle's mother, Mary Flint of St. Louis, said her son has been in South Africa since May working with chimpanzees, which have been "his passion" since seventh grade, when he watched a film about Jane Goodall.

She said her son knew the risks of working with chimps and would not want them blamed for the attack.

"The last thing he would do is blame a chimp for this. He adored them," she said. "Since he was a little boy he just loved them, and I just have faith that ... when all is said and done, he's going to go right back into it."

The two chimpanzees were placed in their night enclosure after the attack and will be held there pending the investigation, Jay said.

Steve Ross, an ape expert at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, said chimpanzees are "naturally a fairly violent species, naturally aggressive, very interested in things like power and hierarchy."

Even researchers who understand their power, "sometimes just relax a little bit," Ross said. "And you can never relax with these chimps. They are so unbelievably fast, strong, and they're always looking for an opportunity."

Ross has worked to raise awareness, but says many chimpanzees are still bred and sold as pets in the United States. People who raise them from infancy often end up trying to place them in zoos when they become aggressive adolescents.

The Goodall institute opened the Chimpanzee Eden sanctuary in 2006 as a haven for chimpanzees, which are not native to South Africa, rescued from elsewhere in Africa. Some lost their parents to poachers in countries where they are hunted for their meat or to be sold as pets, and others were held in captivity in cruel conditions.

According to the sanctuary's website, one of the animals involved in the attack, a chimp named Amadeus, was orphaned in Angola and brought to South Africa in 1996, where he was kept at the Johannesburg Zoo until the sanctuary opened. The other, named Nikki, came from Liberia in 1996 and was among the first chimps at the sanctuary. Before arriving, he had been treated like a son by his owners, who dressed him in clothes, shaved his body and taught him to eat at a table using cutlery, the website said.

In the United States, a Connecticut woman, Charla Nash, was attacked in 2009 by a friend's chimpanzee that ripped off her nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being killed by police. The woman was blinded and has had a face transplant. Lawyers for Nash filed papers this week accusing state officials of failing to seize the animal before the mauling despite a warning that it was dangerous.

Claire Jones, spokeswoman for the Jane Goodall Institute, said in an email that Goodall would have no comment "out of respect for the young man and his family."

Goodall, a Cambridge University-trained ethnologist, began studying chimpanzees in Tanzania's Gombe National Park in 1960. Since 1994, her institute has been involved in conservation programs across Africa. The institute says its Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in Congo is the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa.

Obama pledges federal aid on Colorado wildfire visit

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday promised federal assistance for Colorado's worst-ever wildfire as he toured damage caused by the blaze, which has killed two people, destroyed hundreds of homes and forced the evacuation of 35,000 residents in and around the state's second-largest city.

Obama began his three-hour visit with an Air Force One fly-over of the area left devastated by a blaze that has raged for a week near the base of the famed Pikes Peak mountaintop, while fire crews, taking advantage of more favorable weather, gained additional ground against the flames.

The so-called Waldo Canyon Fire unleashed its greatest fury on Tuesday night when, stoked by strong, erratic winds, it roared into foothill communities in the northwestern corner of Colorado Springs and threatened the U.S. Air Force Academy campus in town.

Lighter winds since then have helped firefighters, numbering over 1,000 by week's end, make greater headway in corralling the flames. By Friday afternoon, they had managed to carve containment lines around 25 percent of the fire's perimeter, up from 15 percent on Thursday.

As of Friday, the fire had scorched nearly 17,000 acres of timber and brush, much of it in the Pike National Forest west of Colorado Springs, a city of more than 400,000 inhabitants about 50 miles south of Denver.

While fire officials said 20,000 homes remained threatened by the blaze, evacuation orders were lifted for some of the estimated 35,000 residents chased from their dwellings earlier this week.

But progress against the blaze was accompanied by grim news as authorities confirmed the full extent of destruction from Tuesday's firestorm - 347 homes destroyed, most of them in the upscale subdivision known as Mountain Shadows.

The tally of homes consumed by the Waldo Canyon blaze ranks as the most on record for Colorado, surpassing the 257 homes destroyed recently by a much larger blaze north of Denver.

Aerial photos of devastation unleashed by the fire showed large swaths of neighborhoods reduced to gray ash - one house after another obliterated while adjacent dwellings survived mostly unscathed.

Also on Friday, Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey said a second body was found in the debris of a burned-out home. The discovery of the first was announced late on Thursday.

Their deaths bring to six the number of people who have perished so far this year in a Colorado wildfire season described by the governor as the worst ever in the state.

FIRE ACROSS THE WEST

"This has been a devastating early fire season for Colorado. This community, obviously, is heartbroken by the loss of homes," Obama said to reporters as he walked along a street of burned-out houses. "We're lucky, because of the quick action that's been taken, that we haven't seen a lot of loss of life."

Obama's motorcade drove through a neighborhood dotted with houses that remained intact next to others that had burned to the ground, rolling past the melted remains of a children's play area and shells of cars destroyed in the inferno.

The president capped his trip by visiting with evacuees at an emergency shelter operated by the American Red Cross.

One of them, Angi Stoffel, 39, recalled the terrifying moments before she and her family were forced to flee.

"The grass back behind our house has been burned, so I guess we're kind of close," she said. "That first night was horrible. It was very scary, so we went all the way to Pueblo just to get away and try to get our thoughts together and get a game plan."

Waldo Canyon was among nearly 50 large, uncontained wildfires being fought across the United States, the bulk of them in 10 western states - Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, South Dakota, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and even Hawaii, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

As of Thursday, 21 heavy airplane tankers continued to fly in and out of firefighting action across the Western states, joining 170 helicopters, 550 fire engines and more than 8,800 personnel on wildfire lines around the country, said White House spokesman Jay Carney. He said about half of all active federal wildfire-fighting resources were currently staged in Colorado.

Obama announced that federal money would be made available to local agencies and individuals affected by the fire.

"We have been putting everything we have into trying to deal with what is one of the worst fires we've seen here in Colorado," Obama said, speaking at a fire station where he shook hands with firefighters and praised them for their courage. But he added: "We've still got a lot more work to do."

While authorities began allowing some evacuees to return Thursday night, hundreds of residents from neighborhoods caught in the heart of a major firestorm on Tuesday remained displaced.

The FBI is investigating whether any of the wildfires were started by criminal activity, but the cause remains unknown.

The fire menacing Colorado Springs follows a recent string of suspected arson fires in a neighboring county, but officials said they had no indication the blaze was deliberately set.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start in parts of the Northern Rockies, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

GREENSBORO, NC (theACC.com)?- Two ACC schools finished in the top 10 of the final 2011-12 Division I Learfield Sports Directors? Cup Standings: Florida State in fifth and North Carolina in eighth. In addition, two other schools finished in the top 16: Virginia and Duke in 15th and 16th, respectively.

For the 11th consecutive year, four or more ACC institutions have placed in the top 30. The ACC is also one of only two leagues with four or more schools in the top 20.

In the league?s 59-year history, ACC institutions have captured 127 team national championships and 249 individual NCAA Titles. Notable accomplishments by the ACC and its 12 member institutions:

  • The ACC is one of three leagues to place multiple schools in the top 10
  • The ACC is one of only two leagues with four or more members in the top 20
  • 52 teams from ACC schools finished in the top 10 of their respective sports nationally (an increase from last year)
  • 94 teams from ACC schools finished in the top 25 of their respective sports nationally
  • Every ACC school had at least one team finish in the top 10
  • This year marks the 11th consecutive year that the ACC has placed four or more schools in the top 30

Florida State claimed the league?s top spot, finishing fifth overall with 1,061 points. FSU also captured its first ACC Men?s Basketball Title.

North Carolina finished in eighth overall with 1,005.5 points. The Tar Heels captured the 2011 NCAA Men?s Soccer Title and finished among the top 10 in eight other sports: Men?s Basketball, Field Hockey, Women?s Soccer, Women?s Golf, Women?s Lacrosse, Men?s Lacrosse, Women?s Tennis and Men?s Tennis.

Virginia was 15th with 910 points. Virginia Rowing captured the 2012 NCAA Championship and was among the Cavaliers? seven teams with top 10 finishes: Women?s Soccer, Women?s Golf, Women?s Lacrosse, Men?s Lacrosse, Women?s Tennis and Men?s Tennis.

In 16th place was Duke with 894.5 points. The Blue Devils had eight teams in top 10 of their respective sports, including national runners-up Women?s Soccer. Other teams were Women?s Lacrosse, Men?s Lacrosse, Women?s Tennis, Men?s Tennis, Fencing, Field Hockey and Women?s Basketball.

BEIRUT -- Turkish troops and antiaircraft batteries were headed toward the tense Turkish-Syrian border region Thursday, Turkish media said, amid reports that special U.N. envoy Kofi Annan was planning to propose a transitional "national unity" Cabinet for Syria.

The Turkish deployment appeared moderate in scale and seemed more defensive and preparatory -- and perhaps symbolic -- than offensive in nature.

Meanwhile, official Syrian state media reported a "terrorist explosion" Thursday in the parking lot outside a judicial complex in central Damascus, the capital. Television images from the scene showed smoke billowing from the blast and firefighters with hoses dousing flames that appeared to have engulfed several parked cars.

There was no immediate word on casualties or damage in Thursday's explosion. Syria has suffered a number of car-bomb attacks in recent months, mostly targeting government or security installations, that have left dozens of civilians dead. The government has blamed "terrorists," its label for anti-government forces.

Rebels seeking to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad have vowed to take the battle to the capital, and fierce clashes have been reported in recent days in Damascus' restive suburbs.

On Wednesday, gunmen stormed a pro-government television station outside the capital, ransacked the offices and studios, set off explosives and killed three journalists and several other employees, state media reported. Press organizations worldwide and the White House condemned the attack.

The raging conflict in Syria has reverberated across the border in Turkey, which shares a 500-mile frontier with its Arab neighbor.

Turkish media reported a convoy of about 30 military vehicles, including trucks with missile launchers, being deployed Thursday along the Syrian border in southern Hatay province.

Turkish officials have stressed that they want to avoid a military confrontation with Syria, but were enraged last week when Syrian forces shot down a Turkish military jet off Syria's Mediterranean coast. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said border security would be bolstered and that any Syrian military units approaching Turkey would be regarded as a threat.

The Turkish military buildup, and the increasingly tense Turkish-Syrian relations, could raise the possibility of a border clash. The Turkish frontier zone has become a haven for Syrian rebels and is also home to tens of thousands of Syrian refugees who have fled the violence next door.

U.N. special envoy Annan has called an emergency meeting of what he calls the "Action Group for Syria" -- including the United States and the four other U.N. Security Council permanent members -- for Saturday in Geneva. The session is widely viewed as a last-ditch effort to salvage his six-point peace plan, widely violated by both sides.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday that Annan seeks to lay down a "political transition road map" for Syria, where Assad?s forces have been battling a more than 15-month-old uprising. In comments to reporters in Helsinki, Finland, Clinton indicated the new "transition" plan could signal a breakthrough in the diplomatic logjam blocking any resolution of the Syrian crisis.

Reuters reported from the United Nations that Annan is proposing a "national unity Cabinet" that would apparently help facilitate a transitional government in Syria. There was no confirmation from Annan about the report.

The U.N. envoy said in a statement that leaders meeting Saturday "should agree on guidelines and principles for a Syrian-led political transition that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, and agree on actions that will make these objectives a reality on the ground."

A major question of any transition blueprint is the fate of Assad, who has been digging in and warning the nation that it is on a war footing.

Washington and its allies say Assad must step down. But Russia and China have so far refused to go along with any international plan calling for his ouster.

401k, IRA, Roth IRA, Mutual fund, stocks, bonds? what are they and how do they differ?

We all know that we should be planning and saving for retirement. Your company might offer a 401k plan with matching funds. Or? perhaps you received a letter from the financial planning department of your bank, offering to help you set up an IRA (Individual Retirement Account). Or maybe you?re tempted to buy Facebook stock now that the price has gone down. Before you make decisions about how to invest your money, get all of the facts so that you can make educated choices.

What?s a 401k?

A 401k is an investment account offered by your employer. It is named for the IRS code that applies to it. You choose the amount of money you want to contribute out of each paycheck (a percentage, often in increments of 1). Your employer withholds that money from your paycheck before calculating the taxes you owe . That means you?ll pay lower income taxes this year. You decide how the money is invested, and you don?t pay any taxes on the money or its earnings until you withdraw it. When you are ready to start withdrawing the money, you?ll likely be in a lower tax bracket than you are now.

Employer Matching

One popular feature of 401k accounts is that many employers offer matching contributions ? if you contribute to your account, your employer does, too. For example, if your company offers a 3% match, that means that if you contribute 3% of your salary, your employer will contribute an equal amount and you?ll end up saving 6% of your salary toward retirement. But it only costs you half that amount to do so! A ?match? is just that ? a match. If you don?t contribute, neither will the employer. In other words, you can choose to contribute a lower amount, but that is also the amount the employer will contribute and you lose out on free money. Under most circumstances, it doesn?t make good financial sense to contribute less than the amount of the match that is available to you. Match or no match, you should contribute as much as possible. You can contribute up to $17,000 in 2012. If you?re 50 or older, you can also make catch-up contributions of up to $5,500. The money your employer contributes does not count against these limits.

Investment Options

Most 401k plans are participant-directed. You choose from several investment options ? usually a variety of mutual funds. The funds carry varying levels of risk depending on the mix of investments within the fund. Having more money in stocks is generally associated with higher risk, and having more money in bonds is associated with lower risk. Younger workers are encouraged to take on more risk, as they have more years before retirement and can ride out fluctuations in the stock market. Higher risk is often associated with higher earnings in the long run. If you are closer to retirement, most advisors suggest a lower-risk investment strategy because you don?t want to experience a big loss right before it?s time to start withdrawing the money. All investments carry some risk and no 401k account is guaranteed to grow. In a participant-directed plan you can change your investment choices at any time, but it?s wise to leave the money alone for at least a few years once you choose investments that fit your retirement goals. Ups and downs are normal and should be expected. In any case, experts are available to you to explain the different fund choices and help you figure out which one is right for you. Contact your 401k?s administrator.

Job Changes & Vesting Schedules

You don?t lose your 401k when you change jobs. The money you contribute is always yours. Sometimes you can leave it in your former employer?s plan. Other times you?ll be required to move it to a new plan. The money just has to be in a qualifying retirement account if you want to avoid paying any penalties. When you transfer the money to a qualifying account, it?s called a rollover and again, the taxes are deferred. If you leave the company, you might not be able to keep all of the funds that your employer contributed to your account. It depends on your company?s vesting schedule. Vesting simply means that you have to be with the company for a certain amount of time before you get to keep all of the money the company contributes to your retirement account. Vesting schedules are often 3- to 6- years. Here?s an example:

Your company might have a 5-year vesting schedule that allows you to increase your ownership of the money by 20% each year. If you leave the company after 4 years, you would be allowed to keep 80% of the employer?s contributions to your account (and 100% of your own contributions). If you stay with the company for 5 years, all of the money is yours. And once you are fully vested, all future contributions are 100% yours.

If you need to, you can borrow against your 401k. Don?t withdraw the money before you?re 59? years old, though. If you do, you?ll pay a substantial penalty.

The bottom line is that if your company offers a 401k plan, participate. And, at a minimum, contribute the amount that will get you the maximum matching funds.

Video Conferencing Display System Sizing and Location - Unified ...

As video conferencing systems become more widely installed, there are often questions about what size monitors and how many are required. While fixed Telepresence systems make this choice easy, most video conferencing systems come as a base unit (generally a small box the size of a mini-PC), and a camera and a table-top speaker. The selection the video displays and mounting/positioning is generally left to the customer or an integrator. The challenge is that often the resulting placement and room set-up leave much to be desired. To best understand the placement, distance and positioning of video monitors in a meeting space, a basic understanding of how humans see and use video is required. Using simple trigonometry it is possible to define the variables to assure optimal positioning and impact of a videoconferencing system. This white paper will review those factors and then cover basic room set-up. It will also discuss how the new 4K displays may enhance the room video experience.

Relative Monitor Sizes

Video Display Monitors come in a variety of sizes. Generally these are described by their diagonal dimension. The diagonal relationship to the vertical and horizontal sizes is based on the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width to the height. Generally monitors come in two aspect ratios: 4x5 and 16x9. The 4x6 ratio is the older NTSC video ratio and is generally not deployed for video as it does not align well with room views. The 16x9 display is better for the width versus height of the usual participants in a room based video conference. Figure 1 shows a comparison of a similar meeting with 16x9 and 4x5 views. As can be seen, the 5x4 display with the same vertical as the 16x9 is much smaller, while the 5x4 with a similar vertical of 60" is actually larger in area by 14%, though the actual displayed images are slightly smaller, even with cropping the edges of the room. For these reasons, 16x9 is the accepted standard for video room systems. It is also the standard for home use and therefore dominates the manufacture of displays.

Screen sizes vary greatly with size. The actual range of video screen sizes is shown in complete form for both single, dual, and triple screens in the associated Video Room Help Sheet on the PKE Consulting web site, but for example, a 50-inch diagonal screen is 43.6 inches wide and 24.5 inches tall. For comparison, a 60-inch diagonal screen is 52.3 inches wide and 24.5 inches tall. While the ratios of the width and height reflect the 60/50 or 1.2 times larger of the 60-inch screen, the actual viewing area of the 60 inch is 44% larger than the 50 inch. Figure 2 shows relative sizes for single screens.

As was discussed in the Video Value white papers from PKE Consulting, the value of video is the capability to see the details in facial and body movements that enable the interpretation of reactions to a conversation. This concept, defined as selling collaboration, is where the visual feedback is critical. For good visual feedback, both high resolution to see details as well as torso views (to see arm movements) are important. This generally resolves to HD video, where 1080P is generally the highest resolution available today. However, if you are too close to the display you can see pixels, the dreaded "screen door" effect of video. The challenge then is how to have that great video for most or all of the participants, without having the pixels visible to some.

First, it is important to understand video projection and how it works with the human eye. The human eye has about 2,000 cones (pixels) of resolution in the diameter of the core non-peripheral vision. This is where you see detail. Though the human eye is capable of receiving light through almost a 200 degree arc, the acute vision is limited to about 15-20 degrees. Of the about 7 million cones in the core visual field of that 15-20 degree arc (Cones are for resolution, rods are for movement - there are about 100M rods in the peripheral field), a HDTV image captures the circular field of about 3.9M as shown in Figure 4. As the rods are denser in that 15 degree core, this is probably closer to 4.5 million cones in the average eye. So, when viewed at exactly the right distance, a 1080x1920 (or called 1080 for short) image exactly matches the eye's inherent resolution.

Even if the image had twice as much resolution, and if you sat at a distance where the screen matched the back of your eye, you could not see the additional resolution. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends an angle of no less than 30 degrees and no more than 60 to watch a screen-based video. The THX standard recommends a 40 degree angle for 16x9 pictures. The point of this is that at the distances associated with these angles for a given screen size, the pixels on the screen are optimized to the cone density in the eye. The reason for a slightly larger angle than the acute angle of the cones is that slight eye movement increases the immersion in the event. Similarly for video conferencing, causing sys movement between participants creates a better "perception" that the event is like a face-to-face meeting. This is part of the reason that a telepresence room with?three screens and participants arrayed across the screens is perceived as more life-like as you have to track to the speaking participant.

Another way to think about ideal video is to think about the range. If 30 degrees is the least and 60 degrees is the maximum, these translate into a range of distances from a specific size display. This is similar to the theater diagram in Figure 5. Figure 6 shows this concept for a 60 inch diagonal monitor with actual distances and angles in a room. The blue angle is the 60 degree minimum angle (as far from the display as a viewer should be for an optimal experience), the green angle is the 40 degree "ideal" THX angle, and the purple is the maximum 60 degree angle (as close as a viewer should be for an optimal experience). The blue box is an overlay on the distance that shows the acceptable limits for this monitor with the solid blue line positioned at the THX ideal viewing position. The challenge with this is that the range of viewing distances for the typical video monitor is relatively limited. If you sit beyond the 30 degree mark (about 8 feet for a 60-inch diagonal display), you will begin to lose the detail. If you sit closer than about 3.75 feet you will begin to see pixels.

The value of this modeling mechanism is that different monitors can be shown on a single diagram as to their ideal viewing distances. Figure 7 shows both 50 and 60-inch viewing distances in a similar way. From this diagram it is easy to see how both the ideal viewing distance and the acceptable ranges of the displays are different. If viewers are in a range of 3-6 feet, the 50 inch is better as the 60 display pixels would be visible to the closer viewers. However, if the viewers are in the 5-8 foot range, then the 60 inch is better for size of image at the 8 foot distance.

Figure 8 shows a calculation of all viewing distances for screens at the 30, 40, and 60 degree angles.

Actual Videoconferencing Rooms

The information above and the modeling can be used to show how actual rooms would look with different sizes of monitors. Most meeting rooms are rectangular, so to accommodate the largest number of participants, the video system is generally placed on a narrow wall. Figure 8 shows a typical small conference room with the ideal viewing distances shown for different display sizes. This room is 12 feet by 11 feet. It has a 7' x 4' table accommodating 5 participants for the conference and the displays mounted directly to the 11-foot wall. The ideal viewing distances can be seen, with the ideal display size probably either the 60 or 65 inch. With the 50-inch display, three of the participants will have poor visibility and with the 70 inch the two closest participants will have serious issues with seeing pixels.

In a longer room the issues are even more severe. Figure 9 shows a longer room at 14 x 11. In this room the table is 9 feet long and is a special video conference optimized design for seeing the participants. However, the issues with viewing distance are actual acerbated by the longer room and are not eliminated by the table. As can be seen, the 70-inch display is probably best, but the viewers in the closest seats will be able to see pixels. This is where the new 4K displays may have value, if they come down in price. A 4K wide 70-inch display would still have the optimal long range distance at the same point, but the pixel visibility point would be less than?three feet from the screen, assuring that the nearest participants would not see a degraded image.

Telepresence Rooms

The key difference in viewing distance in particular is that in telepresence rooms, just as in home theaters, the distance from the screens for all of the participants can be made relatively constant due to a "single layer" seating. Figure 11 shows a typical telepresence room and the associated display distances. As can be seen, either the 60 inch or 65-inch displays have the ideal 40 degree viewing distance at the seating position of the majority of the participants. However, in contrast to the other rooms shown earlier, this room is really only usable for video conferences.

4K Video Conferencing Displays

In the home theater world, there is discussion of 4K video displays for the home. In fact, a number of the companies that make displays and projectors for home theater have announced their intent to deliver a 4K video experience to the home. As the monitors used as displays in video conferencing are based on these displays and technology, is 4K coming to video conferencing soon? While it may not mean more resolution for the video stream, the use of 4K displays in video conferencing rooms may have great value in video conferencing rooms.

For those unaware, the 4K in "4K video" is based on the image having 4,000 (actually 4096) pixels in screen width versus the 1920 of today's "2K" HD displays. While today's typical top of the line display is 1080x1920 pixels, a 4K image is 2180x4096. The result is?four times as many pixels on the screen. 4K is becoming common in theaters as it allows customers to sit closer to the screen and not see pixels. Figure 12, shows a typical home theater and a commercial theater with viewing angles (based on SMPTE) viewing angles. As can be seen, in the home, the viewers tend to sit at about the same distance from the screen, while in the theater there is a much broader range of distances. For this reason, 4K is needed for the closest customers.

The additional resolution of 4K displays could be very valuable for video rooms. One of the key reasons that telepresence rooms have better perceived experiences is that all of the viewers are typical located at a common distance from the displays as shown in the telepresence figure. As can be seen in Figure 11, a 65-inch motor delivers ideal (40 degree) viewing in this type of system. By fixing the viewers to one side of a fixed distance table, the experience is optimized. However, this has two significant drawbacks; the number of participants and the relatively fixed nature of the space, not enabling non-video meetings.

The potential of 4K in the video conferencing arena is shown in Figure 13, contrasting 2K and 4K video ranges. While the viewing angles do not change, the different is that, just like in the theater, pixels will not be visible until the viewer gets half the distance closer to the screen. The smaller 60 degree angle illustrates this. So the short distance viewing area is now extended 50% closer to the screen as shown in the right blue box for a 4K display. Much like the vaunted "retinal displays" of tablets and Smartphones, even sitting fairly close to the 4K monitor will not reveal pixels.

The last figure shows a comparison of 65- and 70-inch 2K and 4K displays in the same conference room shown before. As can be seen, the 70-inch display provides the best overall viewing for almost all of the participants. The farthest participant is just beyond the 30 degree arc, and the closest participants will not see pixels. In fact, an 80 display would be ideal, but these are not yet common in video conferencing due to their high cost. The point is that for video conferencing, bigger displays are generally better, unless you are sitting too close. 4K displays solve that issue.

With the video display vendors moving to 4K, this is a real potential. Both Sony and JVC have shown 4K projectors that use interpolation to create a seamless 4K image from a 2K video stream. And Canon has announced a commercial 4K flat panel display for video mastering that is claimed to not be pixel visible, regardless of distance. It is of relatively small size, only 30 inches, and more tuned to desktop use (the same issues apply for a large display at short viewing distances). LG has indicated they plan on introducing at least one 4K LCD/LED flat panel display late in 2012. With challenges in how to differentiate and compete in video displays becoming clear, 4K is probably the next frontier of competition.

As it is probable the video conferencing stream will stay 2K due to bandwidth and the cost of codecs, the adoption of 4K displays will really just eliminate the pixel visibility for close viewers. As is clear from the earlier discussions of how we see information, in reality, 2K is all most of the participants can actually see. However, the "clear" conclusion is that 4K displays could have a major impact on the perceived quality of the viewing experience in non-telepresence video conferencing rooms. For telepresence rooms with their fixed viewing distances, the 4K displays may be of little value. If the display vendors and installers respond, room-based video conferencing in traditional meeting rooms may get significantly better.

In addition to the 4K display resolution value, the next generation video systems, such as Vidyo, use SVC with a video router instead of an MCU. In this type of system, each video stream is sent to the core and then forwarded at the useable rate to each end point. So if an end point user is watching one image large and the others small, the bit rate on the smaller images can be reduced. 4K displays will open a new opportunity when combined with this technology. As long as any individual image is less than 25% of the entire screen, the image resolution will match the display resolution. This opens a new potential for the room displays to be used in new ways with the users of the room able to assign images to spaces as they see fit. As the room can receive many images at full 1080P/60 resolution, this will enable a new experience, even beyond telepresence. So a two-display room can now be seen as a 8000x2200 pixel space to use. Images of other transmission, whether video from rooms, users, or even content, could be moved and assigned wherever they fit best to optimize the experience.

Conclusions

With the data and information in this white paper, it should be possible to optimize both the seating and distances for most video conferencing rooms. If possible, the telepresence orientation should be used, but for dual purpose rooms that must function as both normal meeting rooms as well as video rooms, choosing the right display can optimize the video experience.

As 4K video monitors become available, their use in room systems will significantly enhance the user experience by enabling the use of larger screens with broader (closer) viewing distances.

On the PKE Consulting web site there is a?two-page pdf?titled,?"Video Room Help Sheet" that can be used in designing rooms. Using this sheet with masking tape and a tape measure, it is possible to lay out ideal distances from display locations in a room to determine both orientation and optimal size. This design effort will pay off in assuring optimal video value and room use.

Nintendo's new 3DS XL was just revealed last week, but we didn't have to wait long for the plus-sized handheld to get put through its paces. Puissance Nintendo got its game on with Nintendo's newest, and if Google's translation is to be believed, the added screen real-estate is, naturally, a welcome addition, and the panel is plenty bright with excellent viewing angles. Also, any negative effects from the bigger pixels present in the display -- it's the same resolution as its baby brother -- have apparently been ameliorated by an anti-aliasing filter of some sort. As for folks concerned about gripping the 3DS XL, fear not, as ergonomics are reportedly spot on, with an even weight distribution that feels no heavier than a standard 3DS. Jobs that require muscle are usually careers that involve lifting, heavier lifting and more lifting. Unless you would like to work as a bouncer then you would not be doing much of it. But still, when you think heavy equipment, hardy men comes to mind first.

Yet, that is not what it is all about. Not all guys who work at areas of heavy work are sturdy because honestly, it is not all the brawns that matter. That s why many jobs do not just hire for built but rather based on the experience and training that a person has had.

Just like for forklifting, it sure is an unusual job and there might not be a degree for it but it sure needs training to become one. Forklift training is an option for people who enjoy this type of work, and since not everyone has the chance to work a white-collar job, why not try other fields as well, right?

What Is Forklifting And Why It Needs Training

Learning to operate a forklift is not like riding a bike. You cannot afford to fall so many times as you will be required to handle situations, cargos and equipment that are in need of extreme care. As an operator, you must be able to assess the situation, rightfully know how to handle and of course, minimize the potential risk.

Sure, riding and falling from the bike makes you learn but forklifting needs no extra danger. That is why every person who wishes to work with bigger toys need training. Accredited institutions offer forklift training, which involves classroom and hands-on learning. Driving a forklift is not your average drive around town, one has to be able to assess the speed with consideration to the load. This is why training is required, no person can work as one without training.

Training usually starts with sit-down sessions learning the basics of it, then after, students will be allowed to operate their own forklift with the guidance of an instructor. Moving of heavy objects, lifting from high to low and passing through inclines and skimpy spaces will all be part of the training. Everything is required to be done without spilling the contents of the cargo or bumping into other structures within the area.

As such, people with impaired vision or those with a disorder that may limit physical movement are given better options. Forklifting may look like driving a golf cart but it does beyond paved planes and flying golf balls. It needs its operators to be active, alert and of course, fit.

So you see, it is not just all about being big and muscular, it needs training that is why any man or woman, skinny or not, can train to become one. Any limitations that a person may have will be known under training. Trainings are conducted to make sure that individuals who are in this line of work are not only working for the money but most especially is in it for safety.

The restaurant stocks a decent wine list, ranging from perfectly quaffable carafe wines to better selections. But behind the long zinc bar, daiquiri machines dispense frozen drinks. It's a come-as-you-are place, where reservations are accepted but rarely seem to be made and where service continues until midnight on weekends. A couple ordering the marquee dishes can easily spend $120 for dinner (prices come down a good deal at lunch).

??Quality varies widely, and it's hard to guess which dishes will satisfy. Price and complexity are not reliable indicators here. The $17 linguini with shrimp and pesto was a relative bargain on this menu and one of the better dishes I tried, as was a $27 entree of scallops, each crowned with a crisp edge and slivered garlic. Shrimp brochettes, filled with sausage and liquefied Monterey Jack and wrapped in charred bacon, were as delicious as they were indelicate.

??But the $29 redfish arrived so heavily salted it could've lasted until winter. Many dishes share the same sides, namely uniformly scooped portions of spicy maque choux and standard-issue whipped potatoes. These all but buried a blackened drum Napoleon, which collapsed under a goopy crawfish etouffee. A good crabmeat maison should not feature shredded lump crabmeat. Superior's is an orb that mixes shrimp and crab and heavily favors the shrimp mixed with strands of crab.

??Guests are paying for fine dining and getting something at least a full notch lower, but there are other considerations here. Families can bring wailing young children, and boy do they. Your cabal of visiting relatives all will be accommodated as readily here as at Superior Grill, a noted expert in crowd service, and everyone will find something to order somewhere on the menu.

??Superior Seafood gets some credit just for rescuing this address, a former Copeland's that sat blighted for years after Hurricane Katrina. If nothing else, that's worth a happy hour stop for some slurping and sipping at Superior Seafood's beautiful marble altar of an oyster bar or lunch out on the sunny patio as the streetcars roll past.

Romney: States have right to secure their borders

(AP) ? Mitt Romney on Monday said states have a duty and a right to secure their borders even as he called for a bipartisan national immigration strategy.

The likely Republican nominee did not address the merits of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down key parts of Arizona's tough immigration enforcement law. But he used it as an opportunity to criticize President Barack Obama for inaction on immigration reform until recently.

"This represents yet another broken promise by this president. I believe that each state has the duty ? and the right ? to secure our borders and preserve the rule of law, particularly when the federal government has failed to meet its responsibilities," Romney said in a written statement released before he left Salt Lake City to fly to a planned fundraiser in Arizona.

Romney has worked to soften his rhetoric on immigration policy since becoming the presumptive Republican nominee for president. During the Republican primary, Romney called Arizona's law a "model" ? though he never explicitly endorsed the law.

The Obama administration sued to block the Arizona law soon after its enactment two years ago. During the primary, Romney said he would have ended the lawsuit against Arizona if elected president.

The Monday Supreme Court decision upholds Arizona's "show me your papers" requirement for the moment. But it takes the teeth out of it by prohibiting police officers from arresting people on minor immigration charges.

The court struck down these three major provisions: requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers; making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job; and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

NBA Draft 2012: Plenty Of New York Talent Available On Thursday

Although the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets don't have a first-round pick, there is plenty of local talent that will be selected in the NBA draft. At least eight New York-area players figure to have their name called on Thursday, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The best of those players is Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who went to school at St. Patrick High School in New Jersey.

Kidd-Gilchrist won an NCAA national championship with the Wildcats in April, and finished the season averaging 11.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. "Great motor, physical defender, he's got a high basketball IQ and he's the youngest player in the draft," NBA college scouting director Ryan Blake said of the 18-year-old. "He's going to come in and he'll earn minutes defensively from his maturity."

Also included in the list of players were St. John's forward Moe Harkless, Kansas guard Tyshawn Taylor, Kentucky guard Doron Lamb, Norfolk State power forward Kyle O'Quinn, West Virginia forward Kevin Jones, Iona guard Scott Machado and Xavier guard Tu Holloway.
