ECB's Noyer: Italy not weak, euro breakup out of (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Italy's economy is fundamentally sound and should be able to win back market confidence if it shows fiscal discipline, European Central Bank member Christian Noyer said on Monday, ruling out a collapse of the euro zone because of the sovereign debt crisis.

Noyer, also Bank of France governor, said he could not comment on reports that Italy was talking to the International Monetary Fund about possible support if investors continue to push up its borrowing costs.

The euro, under selling pressure for weeks, rose on Monday on reports that debt-strapped Italy could turn to the IMF as a lack of consensus hampers Europe's response to its debt problems which threaten to undermine the global economy.

"Italy should not be considered a weak economy," Noyer told reporters in Tokyo.

"A breakup of the euro zone is out of the question. There is no plan B."

Though Italy's debt levels are relatively high, it runs a primary budget surplus and has a strong industrial base, Noyer said. A primary budget balance excludes debt servicing costs and income from bond sales.

One source with knowledge of the matter said contacts between the IMF and Italy had intensified in recent days as concern grows that German opposition to an expanded role for the ECB could leave Italy without a financial backstop.

The source said it was unclear what form of support the IMF might offer, such as a traditional standby arrangement or a precautionary credit line, if a market selloff on Monday forced immediate action.

Policymakers and economists have floated a few possible solutions for Europe's woes, which include common bonds for the euro zone, increased sovereign debt purchases by the ECB and increasing the size of a bailout fund for the region.

Opposition from Germany and other hardliners in the ECB to some of these proposals has fueled speculation that a crisis sparked by Greece's high public debt will spread through Europe largely unchecked.

Noyer said he opposed expanding the ECB's government debt purchases so as to preserve price stability and protect the value of the euro over the long term.

"I believe that virtue will eventually be rewarded," Noyer said earlier in a speech.

"In the next decade, markets and lenders will trust those currencies that, whatever the circumstances, are managed with one overriding priority: preserving price stability and the intrinsic value of the currency unit."

It is up to European governments to provide a lasting backstop for liquidity, Noyer added.

French banks do not face significant problems with funding, so there is no need for the government to re-enact emergency lending facilities used in 2008 at the height of the U.S. subprime loan crisis, he said.

He termed "unreasonable" recent gains in French government bond yields and declines in French bank shares, saying France's fiscal position is stronger than that of many other countries.

Yields are low now in countries whose central banks purchase government debt, but this could become unstable if the inflation environment changes, Noyer said.

A rise in sovereign yield spreads and a loss of confidence in Europe shows there are downside risks to price stability, he said.

Noyer said marking banks' sovereign debt holdings to market prices has unintentionally created more problems as banks felt they would be penalized in the future for holding such debt.

Involving private-sector investors in restructuring Greek debt also shows that sovereign debt is no longer risk free, he said.

New home sales rise 1.3 percent in October (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? New single-family home sales rose in October and the supply of homes on the market fell to its lowest level since April of last year, showing some healing in the battered housing sector.

The Commerce Department on Monday said that sales edged up 1.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted 307,000-unit annual rate, which was the fastest pace in five months yet still below analysts' expectations.

The supply of new homes in the market would last 6.3 months at the current pace of sales.

The data fueled hopes the market for homes could at least be bottoming out following the previous decade's boom and bust in the housing sector.

"This looks like a bottom. The market is stabilizing," said Gregory Miller, an economist at Suntrust Bank in Atlanta.

Prices for U.S. stocks opened sharply higher on hopes that fresh proposals could be emerging out of Europe to help solve the region's debt crisis.

Europe's troubles are casting a pall over the economic outlook in the United States, which has made strides since the summer thanks to strong factory output and improved consumer spending.

Retail sales soared over the Thanksgiving weekend as shoppers scooped up discounted merchandise. Sales were record $52.4 billion, a 16.4 percent jump over the prior year, raising hopes consumer spending would be strong over the holiday season.

But falling home prices and tighter credit continue to be the bane of the recovery, which has progressed with fits and starts since the 2007-2009 recession.

The median sales price dropped 0.5 percent in October to $212,300, the lowest in a year, the Commerce Department said.

Falling prices could hamper the housing market by making buyers see homes as a bad investment. Still, compared to October last year, the median price was up 4.0 percent.

A housing market recovery has been frustrated by a glut of unsold properties and an unemployment rate that has been stuck around 9 percent.

Without a steady supply of credit and at least stable prices, a turnaround in the housing sector could still be some time away.

In a bid to shore up the sector, the government last month expanded its refinancing program to help homeowners who owe more than their houses are worth.

September's sales pace was revised slightly down to 303,000 units from the previously reported 313,000 units. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast sales at a 315,000-unit rate. In the 12 months through October, new home sales are up 8.9 percent.

The U.S. Federal Reserve has held short-term interest rates at nearly zero since 2008 and has expanded its balance sheet in a bid to get credit to businesses and households.

That has helped bring 30-year mortgage rates to record lows. The problem is that even with low rates, many would-be borrowers still cannot get a loan.

Illinois fires Zook after 0-6 collapse (AP)

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. ? Illinois coach Ron Zook was fired Sunday after the Illini followed a 6-0 start to this season with a six-game losing streak.

Zook and the Illini finished off their collapse with a 27-7 defeat at Minnesota on Saturday.

"I believe we need new leadership to take the program to the level to compete for championships on a consistent basis," Illinois Athletic Director Mike Thomas said in a statement released by the university. "This is an extremely competitive conference, and we are determined to go head-to-head with the very best."

Thomas said the defensive coordinator Vic Koenning will take over as interim head coach while a search begins for Zook's successor.

Zook wasn't immediately available for comment but planned a press conference for late Sunday afternoon.

Zook finished 34-51 at Illinois. He took the 2007 team to the Rose Bowl and lost to USC. Last season's squad beat Baylor in the Texas Bowl.

With six wins the Illini could still go to a bowl game. It would be their first back-to-back bowl appearances since 1991 and '92.

Zook came to Illinois in 2005 after being fired in his third season at Florida. He replaced Ron Turner, now an Indianapolis Colts assistant coach.

The 2007 season was Zook's high point at Illinois. The Illini were Big Ten runners-up and upset an undefeated Ohio State team in Columbus that was shooting for a perfect season and a national title.

But only two of Zook's Illinois teams finished with winning records, 2007's 9-4 squad and last year's 7-6 Texas Bowl team.

Thomas praised Zook for the elevating Illinois ? Zook took over after Turner produced four losing seasons in five years. But Thomas, who became AD just last summer, also alluded to Zook's uneven tenure at Illinois.

"It is imperative that our program shows some consistency and competes for championships, and I think a change in coaches can help us get there sooner. I wasn't here seven years ago when Ron Zook took over as coach, but it's clear the program is in better shape than what he inherited."

As word of his firing spread, some of Zook's former players used social media to support their former coach.

"Zook was a good coach and Man," former Illini quarterback and current Oakland Raiders receiver Eddie McGee wrote on Twitter. "Great person who believed in his players. Would do anything for them. If you played for him you know that."

"I still love him as a coach and as a father figure," current Illini tailback Jason Ford wrote.

Zook went 2-9 in his first season at Illinois but Illini fans had the promise of better times ahead. Known as an extraordinary recruiter, Zook's first signing class included highly regarded Chicago quarterback Juice Williams, who started most of the next four seasons.

After another two-win year ? Williams' freshman season ? Zook and the Illini delivered on that promise with the trip to the Rose Bowl. Illinois was blown out in Pasadena, 49-17 by USC, but fans thought good times were on the horizon.

Illinois followed up that surprisingly good season, though, with two bad ones, defying high expectations to go 5-7 and, in 2009, 3-9. Zook kept his job amid speculation that he wouldn't, but was forced to fire virtually his entire staff and hire offensive coordinator Paul Petrino and Koenning. With their help Illinois went 7-6 in 2010.

This season, though, left fans with even deeper doubts.

Illinois took advantage of an early schedule that included five home dates and opponents such as Arkansas State and South Dakota State to roll to 6-0. Then came the losses.

While the defense mostly held up well the offense struggled. Illinois at one point went three games without scoring a first-half point. The Illini averaged less than 15 points a game through the losing streak after putting almost 35 a game through the unbeaten start.

And Illinois' special teams ? a point of emphasis for Zook, who has been an NFL special teams coach ? were often bad. The Illini were last in the Big Ten this season in both kickoff and punt returns and near the bottom of the conference in both kickoff and punt coverage.

Zook brought both that NFL pedigree and the reputation as a tireless worker and recruiter to Illinois.

He peppered his press conferences with references to coaches like Steve Spurrier with whom he'd worked, and once told a reporter, "Can you imagine how much you could get done if you didn't have to eat or sleep?"

But he also brought baggage with him from Florida.

Gator fans were never sold on him as the replacement for Spurrier.

Zook won in each of his three seasons in Gainesville, but never enough, going 8-5, 8-5 and 7-4.

And he had the distinction of being perhaps the first target of a serious Internet campaign to fire a coach. The Web site Fireronzook.com went up shortly after he got the job. He also reportedly got into a shouting match during the 2004 season on the Florida campus with members of a fraternity after a fight between them and some of his players.

How To: Turn Your Instagram Photos Into Wall Art (Mashable)

Instagram photos aren't just for sharing online anymore. You can turn them into photo books, frame them in four-inch bamboo shadowbox frames, create a collage with them on iPhone cases, turn them into iPad screensavers and now, print them on canvas for your wall.

[More from Mashable: Artist Illustrates Finely Detailed Comic Book Magazine Cover [TIMELAPSE VIDEO]]

Earlier this week, CanvasPop launched a service that allows you to print your Instagram photos on two large-format canvas sizes: 12" x 12" (for $29.95) and 20" x 20" (for $59.95). The company sent over a 12" x 12" sample developed with an Instagram shot I took at Kate Spade's Spring 2012 presentation in October.

The original:

[More from Mashable: Scenes from Occupy Tahrir [PHOTOS]]

The print (taken with a less-than-great point-and-shoot):

A closeup:

I was impressed with the quality, particularly given the original image is 612 x 612 pixels at a resolution of 72 dpi. CanvasPop Co-Founder Adrian Salamunovic says the company uses "special filters," among other methods, to improve the photo quality when enlarged. "Plus, canvas is a medium that is naturally forgiving to low resolution images because it is textured and porous, as opposed to a high-gloss photo paper," he added.

The prints are 1.5" deep and can be made with either a white or black border. The canvas appears to be stapled to the back by hand -- as the staples aren't perfectly lined up -- and comes with a mount for hanging the print from the wall. Given the width of the prints, you can get away without framing them. And as you can see above, they look great in rows.

What do you do with your Instagram photos after you've shared them? Would you create print versions on canvas? Let us know in the comments below.

Justin Bieber Tops Kim Kardashian As Bing's Most-Searched Person

Bieber overtakes last year's champ on search engine's annual list of the year's most-Binged people.
By James Montgomery

Having already bested Lady Gaga in the race to 2 billion YouTube views, Justin Bieber can now lay claim to another e-title: He's just been named the year's most-searched person on Internet search engine Bing, edging out his old pal Kim Kardashian for the title.

Yes, Bieber sits atop Bing's annual list of the most-searched people of 2011, making the leap from #6 on last year's list and knocking Kardashian down from the top spot, which she held last year. Jennifer Aniston came in at #3 on the list (up from #9 in 2010), and a whole host of other females — including Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus — round out the top 10.

Bieber was the only male to make Bing's most-searched people list, which last year featured Jesse James, Michael Jackson, Tiger Woods and Barack Obama (who plummeted from #5 to #49 in 2011 ... always a good sign in the lead-up to an election) in the top 10. Also dropping out of the top 10 were actress Sandra Bullock and reality TV mother-of-the-year Kate Gosselin.

Not surprisingly, Bieber also tops Bing's list of most-searched musicians ... and not surprisingly, he's also the only male to make the top 10. JB bested Katy Perry to take the top spot, followed by Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. Bieber's girlfriend Selena Gomez made the list at #6, just ahead of Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Government regulators are sharing some alarming information about Facebook: They believe the online social network has often misled its more than 800 million users about the sanctity of their personal information.

The unflattering portrait of Facebook's privacy practices emerged Tuesday in a Federal Trade Commission complaint alleging that Facebook exposed details about users' lives without getting legally required consent. In some cases, the FTC charged, Facebook allowed potentially sensitive details to be passed along to advertisers and software developers prowling for customers.

To avoid further legal wrangling, Facebook agreed to submit to government audits of its privacy practices every other year for the next two decades. The company committed to getting explicit approval from its users ? a process known as "opting in" ? before changing their privacy controls.

The FTC's truce with Facebook, along with previous settlements with Google and Twitter, is helping to establish more ground rules for online privacy expectations even as Internet companies regularly vacuum up insights about their audiences in an effort to sell more advertising.

Although Facebook didn't acknowledge any wrongdoing in the legal papers it signed with the FTC, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was more contrite in a blog post Tuesday.

"I'm the first to admit that we've made a bunch of mistakes," Zuckerberg wrote. "In particular, I think that a small number of high-profile mistakes ... have often overshadowed much of the good work we've done."

Facebook has overcome its missteps in the past to emerge as the world's largest social network and one of the Internet's most influential companies since Zuckerberg created the website in his Harvard University dorm room in 2004.

No website has been as successful as Facebook at getting people to voluntarily share intimate details about themselves. Zuckerberg has emerged as the Internet's chief evangelist for sharing, partly because he believes it can help make the world a better place by making it easier for people to stay connected with the things and people that they care about.

Facebook also is trying to make money by mining the personal information that it collects to help customize ads and aim the messages at people most likely to buy the products and services being promoted.

That strategy has been working well as Facebook prepares to sell its stock in an initial public offering that's expected next year.

The company's revenue this year is expected to approach $4.3 billion, according to research firm eMarketer, up from $777 million in 2009. The rapid growth is expected to make Facebook the biggest Internet IPO in history, topping Google's stock market debut in 2004.

The FTC's 19-page complaint casts a glaring spotlight on how Facebook has approached its users' rights to privacy at a time that it is facing tougher competition from Internet search leader Google Inc., which has attracted more than 40 million users to a social service called Plus just five months after its debut.

Google tried to lure people away from Facebook with a system that made it easier to guard their personal information. Facebook has responded by introducing more granular privacy settings.

The FTC cracked down on Google eight months ago for alleged privacy abuses that occurred last year when the company attempted to plant a social network called Buzz within its widely used Gmail service. Like Facebook, Google agreed to improve its privacy practices and submit to external audits for the next 20 years.

Twitter, the online short-messaging service, also struck a settlement with the FTC in June 2010 to resolve charges that it didn't do enough to protect users' accounts from computer hackers.

Much of the FTC's complaint against Facebook centers on a series of changes that the company made to its privacy controls in late 2009. The revisions automatically shared information and pictures about Facebook users, even if they previously programmed their privacy settings to shield the content. Among other things, people's profile pictures, lists of online friends and political views were suddenly available for the world to see, the FTC alleged.

The complaint also charges that Facebook shared its users' personal information with third-party advertisers from September 2008 through May 2010 despite several public assurances from company officials that it wasn't passing the data along for marketing purposes.

Facebook believes that happened only in limited instances, generally when users clicked on ads that appeared on their personal profile pages. Most of Facebook's users click on ads when they are on their "Wall" ? a section that highlights their friends' posts ? or while visiting someone else's profile page.

The FTC also alleged that Facebook displayed personal photos even after users deleted them from their accounts.

Facebook's agreement with the FTC requires the company to obey privacy laws or face fines of $16,000 per day for each violation.

"Facebook's innovation does not have to come at the expense of consumer privacy," FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz. "The FTC action will ensure it will not."

The FTC's commissioners unanimously approved the agreement with Facebook. The FTC is accepting public comments through Dec. 30 before deciding whether to finalize the settlement.

Facebook's stepped-up commitment to privacy wasn't enough to satisfy Jeff Chester, executive director for the Center for Digital Democracy, one of the privacy watchdog groups that prodded the FTC investigation. In a statement, Chester called on Zuckerberg and Facebook's board of directors to resign so that the company could hire more trustworthy replacements.

"They misled consumers and should pay a price beyond a 20-year agreement to conduct their business practices in a more above-board fashion," Chester said.

Facebook sought to downplay the gravity of the FTC's allegations, maintaining that it had already addressed most of the privacy complaints. Zuckerberg said the website has added more than 20 new privacy features in the past 18 months.

To underscore its commitment, Facebook has created two new executive positions ? Michael Richter as chief privacy officer of products and Erin Egan as chief privacy officer of policy.

"This means we're making a clear and formal long-term commitment to do the things we've always tried to do and planned to keep doing ? giving you tools to control who can see your information and then making sure only those people you intend can see it," Zuckerberg wrote in his blog post.

UN calls for restraint on eve of Congo vote (Reuters)

KINSHASA (Reuters) ? International organizations appealed for calm on the eve of Democratic Republic of Congo's presidential election, after a run-up tainted by violent street clashes and delayed poll preparations.

Concerns have been mounting about the central African country's readiness for its second post-war presidential contest, and what impact a troubled vote might have on efforts to stabilize the giant minerals-producing nation.

The European Union, the African Union and the United Nations called for restraint after several people were killed in clashes Saturday, the last day of campaigning.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Sunday Congo's election was "crucial for the country's progress," and called on "all political leaders and the people ... to exercise restraint throughout the process to ensure that the elections are held in a peaceful and secure environment."

The EU observer mission accused police of denying President Joseph Kabila's main rival, Etienne Tshisekedi, his right to campaign in the capital after he was blocked by security forces at the airport Saturday.

Police had earlier banned rallies after violence erupted in the sprawling capital Kinshasa. The confirmed death toll for Saturday's violence has risen to three, according to U.N. sources, though Human Rights Watch said eight had been killed and about 70 wounded.

Tshisekedi Sunday accused international actors, including the head of the United Nations mission in Congo, of being against him, and said that, as his rally was blocked on Saturday, he would hold one later Sunday.

"The international community has (in Congo) supported Africa's worst dictatorships for 51 years," he said, adding he wanted UN mission chief Roger Meece, a former U.S. ambassador to Congo during the last election, to step down.

U.N. spokesman Mounoubai Madnodje dismissed the accusations.

The streets of Kinshasa were mostly quiet Sunday after the clashes the day before. Churches held regular Sunday services, street kiosks did brisk trade and residents sat drinking in the city's street bars.

By mid-afternoon, there was no sign of Tshisekedi's rally call being heeded though riot police were deployed at Kinshasa's main stadium where the rally was to be held, and there was a heavy police presence near Tshisekedi's residence.

SHOWDOWN

Enjoying the powers of incumbency, Kabila is seen as the favorite in the vote. But Tshisekedi, a veteran opposition leader who appeals to many poor Congolese that have not see any progress despite eight years of relative peace, has drawn large crowds as his campaign gathered momentum.

Tshisekedi said he would accept results if he lost in a free election but would call on people to "take their responsibility" if the poll was flawed, a reference to likely further street protests.

Human Rights Watch said Congo's Republican Guard had wounded dozens of people after opening fire on them Saturday, and at least eight people were killed. "We're still confirming, and the number of dead might be higher," Human Rights Watch researcher Ida Sawyer said.

Sawyer added that security forces had taken four bodies from the UDPS opposition headquarters where they had been brought following clashes. An eyewitness told Reuters police arrived at the UDPS offices in the early hours of Sunday morning, threatening supporters and taking away bodies.

Police officials were not available to comment.

Election workers were scrambling Sunday to get remaining ballots to polling stations after delays at all stages of the process. But the head of the electoral body said he expected the election to go ahead as planned.

"We would like to assure you 99 percent of things are working perfectly, that's our commitment to you," electoral commission chief Daniel Ngoy Mulunda said.

Congo's last war, in which millions died mainly of famine and disease, ended eight years ago. But the peace is fragile, with pockets of clashes across much of its east while ordinary Congolese complain of rampant corruption and slow development.

Resource firms like Freeport McMoRan and ENRC operate in Congo, a big copper and cobalt producer with ambitions of developing an oil industry, but the country is seen as one of the world's riskiest in which to do business.

GM to offer free loaner cars to Volt owners

(AP) ? General Motors says it will offer free loaner cars to Chevrolet Volt owners if they're concerned about the cars catching fire.

The move comes after last week's announcement that the government is investigating fires involving the Volt's lithium-ion batteries.

The company says it will contact the owners to reassure them that the cars are safe. But it's making the offer to make sure Volt owners don't lose confidence in the cars.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a Volt battery pack that was being monitored after a crash test caught fire on Thursday. The agency says another battery that recently was crash-tested gave off smoke and sparks.

The latest fires are in addition to a battery fire in a crash-tested Volt six months ago.

Vikings rule RB Adrian Peterson out vs. Falcons (AP)

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. ? Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has been ruled out of Sunday's game because of a sprained left ankle.

The Vikings announced Saturday that Peterson had been downgraded on the injury report from doubtful to out and would not travel with the team to Atlanta to play the Falcons. This will be only the fourth game in Peterson's five-year NFL career that he will miss.

Toby Gerhart will be the featured runner in Peterson's place.

The Vikings also waived wide receiver Stephen Burton Saturday and signed tight end Allen Reisner from the practice squad with their top two tight ends hurting. Kyle Rudolph is doubtful because of a bruised quadriceps, and Visanthe Shiancoe is questionable due to a strained hamstring.

NATO strike on Pakistan military 'couldn't come at a worse time'

US officials are scrambling to avoid a further breakdown in US-Pakistan relations after a mistaken NATO strike killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

As the fallout from a mistaken US attack on a Pakistani border outpost on Saturday continues, Pakistan has ordered the US to clear out an airbase it used for drone attacks on targets in Afghanistan.

The US is scrambling to avoid a further scuppering of US-Pakistan ties, which have already deteriorated tremendously in the months since the unilateral US raid on Osama bin Laden's Pakistan hideout.

Although the US has mistakenly attacked Pakistani targets before, this strike was far deadlier, according to the Guardian. A Pakistani government emergency committee convened in Islamabad announced today that Pakistan would " 'revisit and undertake a complete review of all programs, activities and cooperative arrangements' with the US, and US-led forces in Afghanistan, 'including diplomatic, political, military and intelligence.' "

"It is a very tragic incident and?it couldn't come at a worse time," said Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, a spokesman for the international military coalition in Afghanistan, according to the Wall Street Journal. "We are all aware of the grave consequences that an incident like this can have."

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta released a "rare" joint statement Saturday expressing their condolences.

The Shamsi airbase, located in western Baluchistan (see map), is the base for the US drone program, according to the Guardian. It was given over to the US after 9/11 and was "heavily used for launching the war in Afghanistan." However, the Wall Street Journal reports that the US ceased using the base for drone attacks this summer after Pakistan banned it this summer.?

Pakistan also blocked supply routes for NATO troops in Afghanistan following the attack, in which ISAF helicopters accidentally shelled checkpoints on the Pakistani side of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. At least 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed and at least 13 injured.

Agence France-Presse reports that Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar contacted Ms. Clinton to convey Pakistan's "deep sense of rage."

Longtime Mineral Wells Small Business Owner Preps For Final ...

MINERAL WELLS (CBSDFW.COM) ??In the city?s downtown, in the clothing shop she?s run for 31 years, Margaret Colton was ready for Black Friday.

She was dressed festively, with reindeer earrings, ready for eager customers. Problem was, there just really weren?t that many customers.

?Mostly in the last three years it?s steadily gone down,? Colton said.

After 65 years in business, she has made the decision this will be the last Black Friday for Hill?s Style Shoppe.

She didn?t come to the decision lightly.

?After being born and raised in it, it?s a really hard decision,? she said, starting to tear up.

She did literally grow up in the store that her father and grandfather started in 1946. It became a fixture in Mineral Wells, carrying women?s and children?s fashions.

Colton bought the store from her father in 1980, unable to shake the idea of retail out of her blood.

In doing so, she became the fifth straight generation in her family to run a retail store. She has specialized in those specialty items you won?t find at the mall.

Personal service has become a store hallmark.

She helps husbands find clothing she already knows their wives will like. She assists long time customers with the newest lines, even talking them out of pieces they think look good but don?t.

Appreciation for the service, though, has waned.

?A lot of people don?t come downtown,? she said. ?They?ll go to the strip centers. They?ll go to the Walmarts and the Targets, the places where it?s one stop shopping, even though we?re one stop shopping for the woman.?

She is hopeful there is still a place for small business, in a small downtown increasingly full of empty space. But for the first time in her lifetime, she?s not sure.

Colton is in the middle of her going out of business sale, but isn?t sure yet when her store will close.

She plans to try to sell the building in downtown Mineral Wells.

More bloodshed in Syria despite Arab deadline (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? The Syrian government ignored Arab powers' moves to halt its crackdown on a pro-democracy uprising on Friday and more opposition supporters and military personnel were killed in unrelenting violence.

The Syrian military said 10 personnel, including six pilots, were killed in an attack on an air force base and that the incident proved foreign involvement in the eight-month revolt against President Bashar al-Assad's rule.

Government forces shot dead at least four demonstrators in the capital Damascus who were appealing for foreign intervention to stop the crackdown, activists said. Two other civilians were killed in raids on their homes, they said.

Earlier on Friday, a deadline set by the Arab League for Syria to sign a deal allowing peace monitors into the country expired without any government response. Turkey meanwhile said it could no longer tolerate any more bloodshed.

More than 3,500 people are estimated by the United Nations to have been killed since March, the majority of them civilians gunned down as they took to the streets of Syrian towns and cities to call for an end to Assad's rule.

Under the Arab League initiative, Syria agreed to withdraw troops from urban centers, release political prisoners, start a dialogue with the opposition and allow in monitors.

The bloodshed did not stop and Arab foreign ministers said in Cairo on Thursday that unless Syria agreed to the monitors, they would consider imposing sanctions including halting flights, curbing trade and stopping deals with the central bank.

The League extended the deadline after it expired on Friday , saying they would wait until the day's end before deciding what to do.

OBLIQUE

The announcement of the air force attack appeared to be an oblique response.

"An armed terrorist group undertook an evil assassination plot that martyred six pilots, a technical officer and three other personnel on an air force base between Homs and Palmyra," a military spokesman said on state television.

"This confirms the involvement of foreign elements and their support of these terrorist operations in an effort to weaken the fighting capabilities of our forces," he said.

The account fits the government narrative that it is facing an armed insurrection by trouble-makers backed by its enemies, rather than a largely peaceful pro-democracy movement inspired by the Arab Spring revolts which toppled the rulers of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya this year.

A Syrian opposition member told Reuters the attack was an ambush on a military bus near Furqlous, 35 km (22 miles) southwest of Homs.

"Furqlous is a military region and it is not difficult for an insurgent guerrilla force to chose targets there," he said.

State television also showed pictures of thousands of people demonstrating in central Damascus "expressing their rejection of the Arab League decision against Syria."

In neighboring Turkey, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said he hoped the Syrian government would give a positive response to the Arab League plan.

"If it doesn't, there are steps we can take in consultation with the Arab League," he said. "I want to say clearly we have no more tolerance for the bloodshed in Syria.."

The stepped-up pressure followed a French proposal for "humanitarian corridors" to be set up through which food and medicine could be shipped to alleviate civilian suffering.

But some a measure of comfort for Assad came from longtime ally Russia, China and other countries, who expressed opposition to sanctions and warned against a foreign military intervention.

"At the current stage, what is needed is not resolutions, not sanctions, not pressure, but internal Syrian dialogue," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in Moscow.

Lukashevich said Russia supported the Arab League's call for a halt to the violence but that "radical opposition" groups with foreign support shared the blame. Outside military intervention was "absolutely unacceptable."

After a meeting in Moscow on Thursday, diplomats from Russia, China and the other three emerging-market BRICS countries -- Brazil, India and South Africa - also warned against foreign intervention without U.N. backing.

AIDING CIVILIANS

A Western diplomatic source said the French plan, with or without approval from Damascus, could link Syrian civilian centers to the frontiers of Turkey and Lebanon, to the Mediterranean coast or to an airport.

Its aim would enable transport of humanitarian supplies or medicines to civilians.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said the plan fell short of a military intervention but acknowledged that humanitarian convoys would need armed protection.

"Of course...by international observers, but there is no question of military intervention in Syria," he said.

The Arab League suspended Syria's membership two weeks ago, while this week the prime minister of Turkey - a NATO member with the military wherewithal to mount a cross-border operation - told Assad to quit and said he should be mindful of the fate of other fallen dictators.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based opposition group, said at least 47 people were killed in Syria on Thursday, including 16 soldiers and 17 army deserters, mostly around the city of Homs and Rastan to the north.

Alongside the mainly peaceful protests, armed insurgents have increasingly attacked military targets in recent weeks. Officials say 1,100 members of the security forces have been killed since the outbreak of uprising.

Poll predicts Putin's party to get just 53 percent (AP)

MOSCOW ? A poll released Friday predicts that Vladimir Putin's party will receive 53 percent of the vote in Russia's parliamentary election, now a little over a week away.

While still a majority, this would be a significant drop for United Russia and deprive it of the two-thirds majority that has allowed it to amend the constitution without seeking the support of the three other parties in parliament.

United Russia dominates political life in Russia and has received more favorable coverage during the campaign, but it is increasingly disliked by those who see it as representing the interests of a corrupt bureaucracy.

The new poll by the independent Levada Center put the Communists in second place with 20 percent, a boost that suggests they may benefit from the protest vote on Dec. 4.

But many Russians have become disillusioned with the electoral process. Only parties that have the Kremlin's approval are allowed to field candidates, and past elections have drawn strong accusations of vote rigging.

"Forgery, the semblance of a (political) struggle, this won't affect my life and will likely be unfair. This is a summary of a Russian citizen's attitude today to what is going on," Levada Center sociologist Boris Dubin said at the presentation of the polling data.

Nearly half of those surveyed said they expected the vote count to be manipulated.

Nikita Pasternak, a 26-year-old businessman, is among the many Russians who say they see no point in voting.

"Our votes mean absolutely nothing, everything has already been decided," he said. "Putin will be president and United Russia will win the election."

Putin, now prime minister after eight years as president, plans to run for a third term in March, an election he is considered certain to win.

In 2007, United Russia won more than 64 percent of the vote and was awarded 315 of the 450 seats in the State Duma, parliament's elected lower house. The higher percentage of seats is explained by votes that went to parties that failed to rise about the 7 percent threshold; these votes are then distributed to the parties that made it in.

The new poll predicts that the Communist Party's share of the vote will rise to 20 percent from less than 12 percent four years ago. The poll also shows an uptick for the two other smaller parties in parliament: the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party and Just Russia, a party established with Kremlin support to steal votes from the Communists.

The Levada poll was conducted Nov. 18-21 among 1,591 people across the country and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects that poll shows 53 percent not 56 for United Russia. Adds details, photo, byline.)

Mars explorer 'Curiosity' set for Saturday launch

NASA's Mars explorer Curiosity, the most capable robotic rover ever built for taking the measure of a planet, is to launch Saturday morning. Curiosity?will analyze the layered terrain in Gale Crater to read in its rocks the history of the environment there.

NASA's Mars explorer Curiosity, the most capable robotic rover ever built for taking the measure of a planet, is nestled snugly in its protective fairing atop an Atlas V rocket, awaiting a 10:02 launch this morning from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Not since the twin Viking landers touched down on the Martian surface in 1976 has an advanced robotic chemistry lab been dispatched to the planet ? a sibling of Earth that has captured the human imagination for millenniums.

Unlike Vikings 1 and 2, Curiosity will not hunt for direct evidence of life on Mars. Instead, scientists fielding the Mini Cooper-sized rover with its seven foot "neck" will analyze the layered terrain in Gale Crater to read in its rocks the history of the environment there.

IN PICTURES:?Exploring Mars

The crater's rocks show evidence of water in their distant past. And the formations appear to record a progression from wet, to occasionally wet, to dry conditions. Now researchers are hunting for clues about the broader chemical and atmospheric processes affecting the planet during these changes, conditions that could have encouraged or inhibited the possible emergence of life on Mars.

Any life that exists on Mars "will be a function of its environment," says Pamela Conrad, an astrobiologist at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and a deputy principal investigator for one of the soil-analysis instruments Curiosity carries.

"We can't say with any definitive knowledge that we could recognize life somewhere else in the solar system, or beyond the solar system, without being able to unbolt all the assumptions and all the experience we have" looking at life on Earth, Dr. Conrad says.

For Mars, Curiosity represents the tool that will suggest to astrobiologists how loose bolts have to be.??????

But first, Curiosity has to get there.

It's a 354-million-mile trip that begins with this morning's lift-off. Once Curiosity reaches space, the craft's Centaur upper stage will ignite and place the craft in a temporary parking orbit around Earth. Roughly 20 minutes later, the upper stage will ignite once more to send Curiosity on its way to Mars.

During the trip, scientists and engineers will make sure the 10 science instruments aboard the rover are working properly, make any course corrections that might be needed to keep Curiosity on the interplanetary not-so-straight but narrow, and plan the early stages of their exploration of Gale Crater.

Over the course of Curiosity's 98-week primary mission, the rover is expected to cover about 12 miles. But mission managers say they expect it to rack up far more than that if the mission receives extensions, according to Peter Theisinger, project manager for the Mars Science Laboratory at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

Australia plans Coral Sea reserve

The Australian government says it plans to establish the world's largest marine reserve in the Coral Sea.

Environment Minister Tony Burke said the protected zone would cover an area more than one-and-a-half times the size of France.

New fishing limits would be imposed and and exploration for oil and gas banned.

The proposal is subject to a 90-day consultation, but Mr Burke said the Coral Sea's biodiversity was at the heart of the plan.

"There is no other part of Australia's territory where so much comes together - pristine oceans, magnificent coral, a military history which has helped define us and now a clear proposal for permanent protection," he said.

The sea - off the Queensland coast in north-east Australia - is home to sharks and tuna, isolated tropical reefs and deep sea canyons. It is also the resting place of three US navy ships sunk in the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942.

'World leader'

Under the plans, fishing - commercial and recreational - would be allowed in some areas of the reserve, which at its closest point would start 60km (37 miles) from the coast and it extends out to 1,100km.

President of the Queensland Seafood Industry Association Geoff Tilton said a larger area was needed for commercial fishing.

But Professor Terry Hughes, director of coral reef studies at James Cook University, called the proposal a "welcome step" that "cements Australia's reputation as a world leader in marine resource management".

"The proposed Coral Sea no-take area is hundreds of kilometres offshore, and will have no impact on recreational fishing. There is very, very little commercial fishing currently operating legally in the Coral Sea today," he said.

Activists called the plan a good start but said key reefs and spawning grounds lay outside the fully protected area.

Currently the world's largest marine reserve is a 545,000-sq-km area (210,425 sq miles) established by the UK around the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean.

The Coral Sea reserve, if approved, would be approximately 989,842 sq km.

Sehwag falls after Windies score 590 in Mumbai (Reuters)

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? India lost opener Virender Sehwag after the hosts had made a flying start to their pursuit of West Indies' imposing total, reaching the lunch interval on 74 for one wicket on the third day of the third and final test at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

Sehwag (37) began in typical explosive fashion as India looked to eat into the tourists' first innings tally of 590, hitting three fours and a six, before he was bowled by West Indies captain Darren Sammy.

Medium-pacer Sammy, who was swatted for a six by Sehwag in his first over, managed to breach the right-handed batsman's defence with a ball that moved back off the pitch after the openers had put on 67 for the first wicket.

At the interval, Gautam Gambhir (30) and Rahul Dravid (one) were together at the crease.

Sehwag and Gambhir took India past 50 in just the 11th over of the innings but the hosts slowed down considerably after the fall of the wicket, adding just seven runs in 4.3 overs up to the break.

Earlier, India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin completed his second five-wicket haul in three tests as West Indies were finally dismissed for an imposing 590 in the morning.

Resuming on their overnight score of 575-9, the visitors, who won the toss and opted to bat first, added 15 runs in 3.1 overs before Devendra Bishoo was bowled by Ashwin.

Ashwin, 25, who grabbed a maiden five-wicket haul on debut in the first test in Delhi, finished with figures of 5-156 from 52.1 overs.

Building on half-centuries from the top six batsmen, including Darren Bravo's classy 166, the West Indies total has almost certainly ended any hope India had of inflicting a 3-0 series whitewash on the visitors.
