Chinese Satellite Navigation System Beidou Begin Test Services

China started to run its own satellite positioning system, Beidou, on Tuesday as the country climbed the global tech ladder and challenged the monopoly of the West.

Beidou, or Big Dipper, the domestic version of the US Global Positioning System (GPS), started providing navigation, positioning and timing data on a pilot basis to China and the neighboring area for free on Tuesday, Ran Chengqi, director of the China Satellite Navigation Office, said.

The system, with 10 orbiting satellites, covers an area from Australia in the south to Russia in the north. Signals can reach the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in the west and the Pacific Ocean in the east, Ran said.

With six more satellites to be launched next year, the system will cover a wider area and eventually the entire globe by 2020 with a constellation of 35 satellites, he said.

The accuracy of the positioning service will also improve as more satellites orbit.

During the trial run Beidou can offer positioning to within 25 meters but when the system is officially launched next year accuracy will be enhanced to within 10 meters, he said.

With the system operational China is the third member of an elite group, along with the US and Russia, to develop a satellite navigation system.

The US spent 20 years and more than $20 billion on the GPS. Completed in 1994, the system has 24 navigation satellites and is widely used around the world.

Beidou has its own unique features, Ran said.

"It not only tells users where they are and what time it is but also allows users to tell others the information through short messages," Ran said, adding that this feature is being considered by other systems.

Russia's Glonass system achieved a 24-satellite constellation in 1996 but succumbed to funding problems.

The rebuilding of the Glonass system is almost finished and Russian media reported that the system resumed service earlier this month.

The European Union and the European Space Agency are building the Galileo satellite navigation system. Japan and India also intend to build independent regional navigation systems.

It's not a flying fish, it's a submarine-launched UAV

VTOL may be old news already, but here's another great USP for any UAV: the ability to launch from a submerged submarine. The technology is still in development, but the Navy wants to try it from periscope depth during exercises in the Pacific Ocean next year. If all goes to plan, a Switchblade folding-wing drone will be ejected from the submarine's trash disposal unit and then carried to the surface by an SLV ('submerged launch vehicle'), which will keep it dry, point it into the wind and then hurl it heavenwards so it can go a-snooping. Whether the experiment succeeds or fails, we've glimpsed a worrying possibility: submarines are capable of dumping their trash right into the ocean. Until now, we sort of assumed they took it home with them.

Military Wives Choir: The Improbable Story Behind The U.K.'s Top-Selling Christmas Single | Billboard.biz

December 27, 2011

It's been a while since there was any sense of anticipation surrounding the U.K. Christmas number one, nabbed, as it has been by Simon Cowell's enterprises. But for only the second time in seven years, a non-Cowell act has topped the U.K singles charts at Christmas.

And while X Factor wins often benefit from a tale of woe, ersatz or otherwise, the latest number one is about as genuinely poignant as it gets.

Military Wives, Italian Donkey Song, Nirvana: The Always Entertaining & Bizarre Race For UK's No. 1 Christmas Single

The Military Wives Choir was formed by TV choirmaster Gareth Malone for a BBC2 documentary earlier this year. The choir, made up of spouses of the U.K's military, captured the hearts of the nation with its performance of a specially commissioned piece, "Wherever You Are" at the Festival Of Remembrance at London's Albert Hall in November (and broadcast on BBC1).

As luck would have it, Decca's president Dickon Stainer was in the audience and persuaded them to record the single, "for posterity as much as anything else," then their story took off thanks in part to Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans and the single was released on Universal/Decca. Pre-release it became the most ordered track in Amazon's history and in its first week sold 556,000 copies, outselling the rest of the top 10 combined and the X Factor single by a six-to-one margin.

With 40 pence (about 63 cents) in every physical and 50p? (78 cents) in every digital release going to the Royal British Legion and Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) charities, it's got the feel-good factor pretty much sewn-up. Moreover, the words to the song were written by composer Paul Mealor who used the wives' real-life letters to and from their partners during their six-month tours of Afghanistan.

As well as being a blow for Cowell, the track is a major coup for its Mealor, whose career looks set to go stratospheric, or as stratospheric as a modern classical composer's career can go. Mealor's work, "Ubi Caritas," was performed at the Royal Wedding in April but this new exposure has seen his album, "A Tender Light" (Decca Classics) top the classical charts for the last five weeks. Says Stainer, "It's amazing to have a living classical composer as number one in the classical charts alone but this will see a move to upscale his album to supermarkets."

For Mealor's part, being performed at Westminster Abbey and being the "gimmick" single of the year, aren't mutually exclusive. "Music has to be useful and shouldn't exist in an ivory tower," he says, "Mozart's music was sung in the street. We have lost that. It's important that composers are engaged with pop culture. There is this snobbish view that because I have had a Christmas number one, I can't write a symphony."

And he'd better get used to his new status. "The other day I was in a taxi and the driver was humming along," he laughs, "which was strange." And there has been interest in further recordings of the single, though he won't be drawn out by whom, saying only, tantalizingly, "some pretty big names?"

Both Mealor and Stainer agree that the track's appeal lies in its simplicity and honesty. Says Mealor, "It was never intended as a Christmas tune. It was not a manufactured thing at all."

But we were ready for it, Says Stainer, "The nation was ready for a feel-good story."

Despite U.K. newspaper reports to the contrary, we won't be seeing a Military Wives album any time soon. Says Stainer, "We'll go away for Christmas and think about it. We might have a conversation in the New Year about it but they are working wives with responsibilities. We'll see?"

GOP chairman: Ring not too small for many hats (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The head of the Republican Party says no negative vibes should be inferred from the GOP's inability, so far, to coalesce around a candidate to challenge President Barack Obama.

Reince Priebus (ryns PREE'-bus) tells ABC's "Good Morning America" it's very early, calling it "a horse race."

He adds, "We'll get there and we'll have a nominee pretty quickly." Asked if the muddled contest might be problematical, Priebus replies, "I don't know if I would get too uptight over that."

Priebus says he isn't worried about a third-party candidate, saying that would likely pose a greater threat to Obama than the GOP.

The party chairman says, "I just think America is ready to put a person in the White House who can make a promise and keep a promise.:"

NBA's return draws big TV ratings on Christmas (AP)

NEW YORK ? NBA fans seem more excited about basketball's return than bitter about the lockout based on television ratings for the league's delayed openers.

The five Christmas games Sunday averaged 6.2 million viewers based on fast national ratings, up from 6 million last year.

The Bulls-Lakers matchup was the third most-watched regular-season game ever on ABC, behind only last year's highly anticipated Heat-Lakers showdown and another meeting between Miami and LA in 2004.

Chris Paul's Clippers debut in the nightcap against the Warriors earned a 2.2 rating, up 69 percent over last year's Portland-Golden State telecast in the same slot.

It was ESPN's highest-rated Christmas prime-time game. The day's first contest, Celtics-Knicks on TNT, was the most viewed Christmas game ever on cable. The 4.0 rating was up 48 percent from last year's Bulls-Knicks game on ESPN.

The first night game on ESPN ? Magic-Thunder ? drew a 1.8, up 29 percent from last year's Denver-Oklahoma City matchup. The afternoon's finals rematch on ABC, the Heat's rout of the Mavericks, earned a 4.9, up 7 percent from Boston-Orlando last year.

Ratings represent the percentage of all homes with televisions tuned to a program.

'Forrest Gump' to be preserved in US film registry (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Forrest Gump's oft-imitated line, "My momma always said, `Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get' " will be immortalized among the nation's treasures in the world's largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.

The Library of Congress on Wednesday announced that 1994's smash hit "Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks was one of 25 films chosen to be included this year in the National Film Registry.

The oldest reels are silent films both from 1912. "The Cry of the Children" is about the pre-World War I child labor reform movement and "A Cure for Pokeritis" features the industry's earliest comic superstar John Bunny.

Also from that silent era is Charlie Chaplin's first full-length feature, "The Kid," from 1921.

Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. This year, 2,228 films were nominated.

"These films are selected because of their enduring significance to American culture," Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said in a statement. "Our film heritage must be protected because these cinematic treasures document our history and culture and reflect our hopes and dreams."

For each title, the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation works to ensure that the film is preserved for future generations. That comes either by the Library's massive motion-picture preservation program or through collaborating with other archives, motion-picture studios and independent filmmakers.

The most recent film chosen is "Forrest Gump," which won six Academy Awards including for Best Picture.

Also starring in that movie about an everyman who ended up being part of the most iconic events of the 1960s and 1970s was Sally Field. Her perhaps most famous role playing "Norma Rae" in the movie of the same name from 1979 also made the list. She won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a poorly educated single mother who fought successfully to make her Southern textile mill a union shop.

Making the list is the animated Disney classic, "Bambi," made in 1942 about a deer's life in the forest, "The Big Heat" from 1953, a post-war noir film, and 1991's disturbing, "The Silence of the Lambs," which won Oscars for stars Jody Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins plays cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the psychological and violent thriller.

The original "War of the Worlds" from 1953 also will be preserved along with "Porgy and Bess," "Stand and Deliver" and John Ford's epic Western, "The Iron Horse," from 1924.

Lesser known films were chosen for their significance to the art.

"A Computer Animated Hand" from 1972 is by Pixar Animation Studios co-founder Ed Catmull. The one-minute film that is one of the earliest examples of 3D computer animation displays the hand turning, opening and closing, pointing at the viewer and flexing its fingers.

Making the list were notable documentaries as well.

"Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment," focuses on Gov. George Wallace's attempt to prevent two African-American students from enrolling in the University of Alabama and the response of President John F. Kennedy. "Growing Up Female" from 1971 was one of the first films to come from the women's liberation movement.

Also included was "The Negro Soldier," produced by Frank Capra. It showed the heroism of blacks in the nation's wars and became mandatory viewing for all soldiers from spring 1944 until World War II's end.

Some call for Dec. 29 as Dump Go Daddy day

By Suzanne Choney

Go Daddy is the target of some angry users who want to penalize the Web hosting giant and Internet domain registrar for its support of a controversial online piracy bill, despite Go Daddy recently retracting it after losing more than 37,000 Web domains in just the last several days, according to reports.

"There's a strange irony to the sudden, seemingly grassroots campaign against Go Daddy," writes Joe Wilcox of BetaNews, which says the "mass call for a Go Daddy boycott ... has taken on mass peer-pressure hysteria ? that by association you are somehow evil if you don't transfer domains from Go Daddy":

Stated differently, Go Daddy protesters block peoples' right to choose, too, by pressuring them to leave the registrar. They're guilty now of what they accuse the government would do in the future ? suppressing freedom on the Internet.

The Go Daddy boycott and "dump day" were organized by users of social news site? Reddit, who also set up a boycott site:

Since the announcement of the boycott of Go Daddy, Go Daddy has just publicly dropped their support of the heinous Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA. But, they still support the Senate version of SOPA, called PIPA or PROTECT-IP. If you work on the internet and do business with Go Daddy you're supporting a company who is actively working against your best interests.

Hollywood studios and record companies favor the Stop Online Piracy Act as much as many major technology companies ? including Google, Facebook, Apple, Intel and Microsoft ? oppose it. The bill makes the streaming of unauthorized content a felony. But it also would require websites and telecom service providers to monitor content and traffic across their networks for piracy, and let law enforcement actually seize a website and shut it down.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee said it would delay debate on the bill, H.R. 3261, until early next year.

Go Daddy's CEO, Warren Adelman, in a Dec. 23 press release, said the company is pulling its support for SOPA, and that while fighting online piracy is of "the utmost importance .. we can clearly do better. It's very important that all Internet stakeholders work together on this. Getting it right is worth the wait. Go Daddy will support it when and if the Internet community supports it."

Despite that diplomatic tone, Go Daddy's Christine Jones made it quite clear in the same press release that the company "has always fought to preserve the intellectual property rights of third parties, and will continue to do so in the future."

Privacy rights and a thinning Canada-U.S. border

By Peter McKenna

Commentary

Recently, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama launched the Beyond the Border pact in Washington to make trade and travel easier between the two countries. That was the easy part. Now the hard work begins on determining what it means for Canadians.

Besides dealing with economic competitiveness and regulatory reform to dilute a thickening border, the accord also deals with contentious issues around perimeter security. This is obviously the key part of the agreement for Washington and, most significantly, the Department of Homeland Security, which is now largely shaping the Canada-U.S. relationship.

Accordingly, the arrangement makes reference to an entry-exit tracking system (which comes with a price tag of almost $1 billion) for purposes of allaying U.S fears (real or imagined) about securing the border. The Americans have been pressing the Canadian government hard for some time now to collect such data and to turn it over to them for security reasons.

The accompanying "action plan" refers to a joint commitment in this way: "Share relevant, reliable, and accurate information within the legal and privacy regimes of both countries, such as information contained in biographic and biometric national-security watch lists, certain traveller criminal-history records and immigration violations."

The document then goes on to state the intent of the two countries: "To establish coordinated entry and exit systems at the common border, we commit to develop a system to exchange biographical information on the entry of travellers, including citizens, permanent residents and third-country nationals, such that a record of entry into one country could be considered as a record of an exit from the other."

More controversially perhaps is the reference to air travel provisions (as well as common land border ports of entry) to be in place by June 2014: "Canada will develop a system to establish exit, similar to that in the United States, under which airlines will be required to submit their passenger manifest information on outbound international flights. Exploratory work will be conducted for future integration of entry and exit information systems for the marine and rail modes."

So what exactly does this all mean for ordinary Canadians? What sorts of information - and how much - will Canada provide to our American friends? Furthermore, how can we ensure that this data is properly (and legally) used and protected?

More to the point: what happens to Canadian travellers who are wrongly accused of posing a security threat to the U.S. homeland? Most Canadians know what happened to one of our citizens, Maher Arar, when mistaken information that was shared with American intelligence officials resulted in him being shipped off to a grim Syrian prison cell, where he was subsequently tortured for 10 months.

There are a slew of other pertinent questions too: How do you get your name off the watch or no-fly list once it has been erroneously placed there? If you were picked up by police at a G-20 protest or an Occupy movement event, would that information be turned over? What if someone has travelled to Cuba recently?

What's to say that all this information - once collected - will remain solely in the Department of Homeland Security? And once you start opening the information tap, how do you say no to further requests by the U.S. for additional information? What if U.S. officials wanted access to the names of all those who emigrated to Canada in a certain year?

Canada's Privacy Commission Jennifer Stoddard has already raised a red flag about the potential pitfalls of sharing information about Canadians with U.S. border officials in the absence of stringent safeguards against abuse. "Any mistake can have grave consequences, including stranding travellers at airports or branding them as terrorists," she told CBC News.

No one is quite sure what safeguards have been put into place to protect Canadians' privacy or what exactly happens to that same information once U.S authorities get their hands on it. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association has also raised concerns about a shared watch list of travellers and whether there exists a clear appeals procedure for whenever mistakes are made.

There is so much that is not known about this personal information-sharing arrangement. There also seems to be a lot of unanswered questions. Perhaps there are simple explanations for all of them.

However, I would certainly feel more comfortable if there was some parliamentary oversight committee, an ombudsperson or an independent office to ensure that the privacy of Canadians is being well protected. But I doubt that that is going to happen.

Peter McKenna is professor of political science at the University of Prince Edward Island.

PFT: Chargers delay decision on Turner's fate

New York Giants Cruz celebrates in front of the New York Jets bench after making a pass reception in East RutherfordReuters

All I wanted for Christmas was 14 NFL contests on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

And I got it, primarily since there was little or no danger of shooting my eye out.

The best part about it?? The ability to write 10 things about what I saw while enjoying the 14 games-a-playing.

1.? ?Playoff turnover trend continues.

While the final postseason field isn?t quite yet settled, it?s already obvious from the teams that made it ? and the teams that won?t ? that the trend of 50-percent playoff turnover most likely will once again hold true.

In the AFC, the Patriots, Steelers, and Ravens have made it back again to the playoffs.? But the Colts, Chargers, and (most likely) the Jets will be left behind.

Replacing them will be the Texans and some combination of the Broncos, Raiders, Bengals, and Titans, with the Jets having a far-slimmer-than-Rex chance of dropping the turnover rate to 33 percent.

In the NFC, the Packers, Saints, and Falcons will be back.? Dumped from contention are the Eagles, Seahawks, and Bears.? Taking their places will be the Cowboys or the Giants, along with the Lions and 49ers.

Maybe we should quit calling this a trend.? Maybe it?s now the rule, and any situations in which more than half of the playoff field makes it back the next year should be regarded as the exception.

For the NFL, it?s a great development, because it creates annual hope for the 20 teams that end up on the outside looking in.? Every year, the fans of those franchises can take some solace in the notion that nearly a third of them will be playing for a Super Bowl title the following year.

Even the Bills and the Browns.

2.? Steelers face tough decision on Ben.

It?s hard to gauge the overall impressiveness of the Steelers? 27-0 win over the Rams, due to the quality of the competition.? But the decision to sit Ben Roethlisberger and start veteran Charlie Batch at quarterback couldn?t have gone much better.

So why not do it again?

The Steelers, after all, are playing the lowly Browns.? And while Pittsburgh?s arch-rivals from Cleveland would love nothing more than to keep the Steelers from winning the AFC North and clinching the No. 2 seed (even if it means seeing the even-more-hated Ravens pocket those prizes), the Steelers have the weaponry to handle the Browns with Batch or Dennis Dixon or even Terry Hanratty at quarterback.

On the other hand, getting a bye and securing home field advantage for at least the division round and possibly, if the Pats lose to the Bills in Week 17 or at home in the conference semifinals, the AFC title game carries with it tremendous value.? If, in the end, the Steelers indeed are on a collision course to play the Ravens again, it?s important for that game to be played in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers have beaten the Ravens twice in the last three postseasons.

The fact that the Bengals can get in with a win, which gives them even more motivation to beat the Ravens, should make the Steelers more willing to load up the cannon in order to beat the Browns.? Thus, while it was reckless for the Steelers to go with Roethlisberger only 11 days after he suffered the sprained ankle, Sunday?s game invites a calculated risk that, if it works out, could generate a great reward.

If it doesn?t pay off, the Steelers will be in no worse shape, since they?re locked in as the fifth seed.

Unless, of course, Roethlisberger aggravates the ankle with as little as six days to get ready for a game in Denver or Oakland.

In the end, it won?t be an easy call.? Maybe the answer will be to use Roethlisberger until the game against the Browns seems to be decided ? or until the scoreboard shows that the Ravens are handling the Bengals.

3.? AFC playoff field is flawed.

Not that long ago, all the best teams resided in the AFC.? Now, the once top-heavy conference has teams at the top that are littered with warts.

The Patriots, currently the top seed, possess a porous defense and not much of a running game.? Last time I checked, those were two key components of any serious playoff run.

The Ravens seem to be the most dangerous team of the bunch, as long as they can put it all together.? But they seem only to put it all together when playing good teams.? Saturday?s dilly-dallying with the Browns shows that the Ravens could be ripe for an upset if/when a lesser franchise comes to town.

Not long ago, the Texans were the ?it? team.? Now, many of their fans want to add an ?s? and an ?h? to that description.? With scant playoff experience on the roster, the Texans will need to make a quick adjustment when it?s time to play the big boys in the conference.

The Steelers have the tools to beat anyone, but they?re in danger of having to do it the hard way, with three hurdles to clear ? all of which most likely will come on the road ? before a earning a return trip to the Super Bowl.

The Broncos can beat anyone on any given day.? As we saw in fairly dramatic fashion on Saturday, they can lose to anyone, too.? Including a team that was riding a seven-game winning streak.? Even if the clock is striking twelve on Tebow Time, it?s hard to see this team winning in Pittsburgh/Baltimore, New England, or even Houston.

Ditto for the Raiders, who have at times looked good enough to barely win and at other times bad enough to be blown off the field.

That means the team poised to pocket the last ticket to the party ? the Bengals ? could be the most dangerous.? With a capable defense, a better-than-expected rookie quarterback, and a better-than-most rookie receiver, the team with the least to lose and the lowest expectations could string together one win after another, thanks to the deeply flawed field of candidates.

Of course, this could mean that the winner of the conference will end up being the sacrificial lambs for the Packers, Saints, or 49ers.? Unless, of course, the Ravens avoid playing down to the competition in their own conference long enough to earn a crack at the best teams in the league.

4.? Tough year for top two tailbacks.

Entering the 2011 football season, running backs in the NFL fell into two categories:? (1) Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson; and (2) everyone else.

And the season started very well for both men, who took two very different paths to getting paid a lot of money.? Johnson held out of training camp and the preseason, getting his big-money deal only days before the start of the season.? Peterson happily entered the final season of his rookie contract without creating any overt drama, even though it privately was known he wouldn?t react well to being subjected to the franchise tag in 2012.

Once the games started, it became clear that the holdout hampered Johnson.? Peterson performed well as usual, but he was underutilized at times by a Vikings team that kept blowing second-half leads.

Now that Peterson has suffered a serious knee injury, which seemed inevitable given his hard-charging running style, both men have a long way to go to prove that they remain the best tailbacks in the game.? Johnson needs to rediscover the explosiveness that allowed him to slide through a crease and hit the nitrous button; Peterson needs to get healthy.

Their experiences demonstrate that, unlike the quarterback position, which produces a tight nucleus of elite players who remain at that level for years, the best running backs have become a revolving door, with each year producing new guys who?ll enter the next season at the top of the league ? and who?ll have only a limited window to remain there.

5.? Cruz control in New York.

In his team?s first game of the 2010 preseason, undrafted rookie receiver Victor Cruz created a major stir for the Giants, with a performance that featured 145 yards and three touchdowns against the Jets in their annual exhibition.? But then the regular season started, and Cruz disappeared from view, making zero receptions before suffering a season-ending injury.

The 2011 campaign began far more inconspicuously for Cruz, with no touchdowns in the preseason and no receptions in the regular-season opener.? In Week Two, Cruz had only two catches for 17 yards.

Then came the explosion.? In the past 13 games, Cruz has generated 1,341 receiving yards.? Combined with the paltry 51 feet from the first eighth of the season, Cruz now has become the single-season receiving yardage leader in the storied history of the Giants franchise.

And the breaking of Amani Toomers? record came in perhaps the biggest regular-season game the Giants have had in years ? a cross-town/cross-stadium rivalry with the loud-mouthed Jets, in which Cruz?s nine-yard catch and 90-yard run turned the tide of a game in which the ?home? team in Green seemed to be overpowering the team that had won only one of six games.

As a result, Cruz needs to be taken seriously as one of the best young receivers in the game.? It?s a great story for a New Jersey kid who simply wanted to play in the NFL.? Cruz, through two NFL seasons, is on track not just to play but to dominate.

6.? Heaping helping of humble pie for the Ryans.

It?ll be interesting to see the relationship between the outcome of the 2011 regular season and the extent to which the Ryan twins keep talking.? For Rex, the Jets head coach, he had a chance to put up or shut up against the Giants.? Rex didn?t put up; now we?ll see whether he shuts up.

For Rob, the Cowboys defensive coordinator, another ugly loss to the Eagles and a looming winner-take-all game against the team that just beat Rex should induce caution and, relatively speaking, silence.

But guys who like to talk tend to find ways to keep talking.? Even after a season in which the Eagles scored a total of 99 points against the Ryans in three games, and with both the Jets and Cowboys facing a strong possibility of no postseason appearance for either team, it?s unlikely that they?ll change.

They can?t change; they are who they are, which is the source of their appeal to the men who play for them.? And as long as their players respond well to Rex and Rob, they?ll have a place in the league.

Besides, there?s still a chance ? slim as it may be ? that both men will extend their seasons past January 1.? For Rob, it?s a simple win-and-in proposition.? For Rex, the odds are longer, but it?s no huge stretch to think that the Jets will beat the Dolphins, the Ravens will beat the Bengals, the Texans will beat the Titans, and the Raiders or the Broncos will lose to the Chargers or the Chiefs, respectively.

If that all happens, Rex will find a way to quickly and completely digest his Christmas Eve portion of humble pie.? And now that the Jets have bottomed out for the third time this year, the boomerang effect could carry them deep into that deeply flawed AFC playoff field.

7.? It?ll be hard to keep Raheem.

The Buccaneers nearly made it to the postseason in 2010.? But for a surprising (at the time) home loss to the Lions, the 10-6 Bucs would have claimed the last seat at the NFC table, bouncing to the curb the eventual Super Bowl champions.

This year, expectations were higher, even though they were tempered by the reality that the Bucs compete with the Falcons and Saints in the NFC South.? A 4-2 start to the season, including wins over said Falcons and Saints, created a sense that the ?yungry? team from Tampa could take over the division.

And then the bottom dropped out.

Nine straight losses later, including two to a Carolina team that won only two total games a year ago, the Bucs have clinched the basement.? With coach Raheem Morris having only one year left on his contract and receiving no public or (by all appearances) private assurances that he?ll be back in 2012, it?s safe to assume that ownership will move on.

With the Jon Gruden buyout completed and Morris being paid nowhere near the top of the coaching food chain, it?ll be no problem to pay him not to coach the team in 2011.? And with the Bucs on track to finish the year with as many consecutive losses as total victories a year ago, it?ll be virtually impossible for a team that struggles to sell tickets to bring Raheem back.

But then who will they hire to run the team?? The up-and-coming coordinator who happens to be the younger brother of the guy the Bucs fired three years ago?? Another young assistant coach with low recognition, low salary demands, and, in turn, a limited ability to put butts in seats?

Or will the Glazer family decide to spend some of the money that hasn?t been devoted to player costs over the past several years on a big-name coach whose mere presence will help market the team?

We?ll all find out the answer soon.? The end result could result in even more empty seats next year at Raymond James Stadium.

8.? Lions peaking at the right time, but will it matter?

After the Lions slumped from 5-0 to 7-5, serious questions hovered regarding the team?s true ability to compete.? The loss of running back Jahvid Best to a season-ending concussion and the decision of opposing defenses to blanket receiver Calvin Johnson took the sting out of the offense.? The Ndamukong Suh imbroglio created a torrent of negative publicity, and a sense that the Lions simply weren?t ready to compete at the highest levels of the league.

Three straight wins in a row later, the Lions have made it to the postseason for the first time since 1999, and they?re being regarded as a serious threat to make some major noise when the playoffs start.

But will they?? Though Saturday?s thumping of the Chargers arguably was the most impressive victory of the season, the Lions barely held on to beat a bad Vikings team and found a way to steal a road win over the up-and-down Raiders.

It?s entirely possible that the bolt of momentum coming from the knockout blow that the Lions administered to the Chargers will help the Lions win a game or two, or maybe more, when it counts the most.? Ultimately, the Lions? fate could be influenced heavily by whether they enter the playoffs as the No. 5 or No. 6 seed.

If they can hold off the Falcons for the primary wild-card spot in the NFC, the Lions will play at Dallas (where the Lions won during the season) or New York (where the Giants have a hard time holding serve, at least when they?re not the visiting team).? But if the Lions slide into the sixth spot, Detroit will have to return to New Orleans, where they lost badly in early December.

The Saints seem to be unbeatable in the Superdome.? Perhaps the Lions could find a way to beat them there, but the Lions would surely prefer not to be forced to try.

And that creates an interesting dilemma for the Packers next week.? With the top seed clinched, should Green Bay rest their starters for the postseason, or should they do everything they can to force the Lions? postseason tour to commence with the possibility of inevitable failure in New Orleans?

9.? Eventual Super Bowl teams dodged a bullet.

In less than a month, we?ll know the identities of the teams who?ll qualify for the biggest event in all of sport.? Whoever makes it should look back to Week 16, and breathe a deep sigh of relief.? (Not to be confused with the many other types of sighs.)

On Christmas Eve, two of the most potentially disruptive teams summarily were erased from postseason contention, when the Chargers saw their three-game winning streak end in Detroit and when the Eagles saw their own three-game run rendered irrelevant by the Giants? win over the Jets.

Either team could have wreaked major havoc in January.? Just as the Packers barely made it to the playoffs as the NFC?s sixth seed in 2010 and then won the whole thing, the Eagles and Chargers could have parlayed late-season surges into postseason pillaging.

Now, none of the other playoff teams have to worry about the two teams who were the hottest in the league entering Week 16.? The Eagles have gotten even hotter, and the Packers, 49ers, and Saints should be thrilled that the Eagles won?t get a chance to extend that vibe beyond Sunday.

10.? The bloom is off the Tebow.

Eight days ago, Tim Tebow had reached the pinnacle of pro football popularity and/or notoriety.? The Broncos quarterback had become the biggest name in football, joining only a small handful of football players who can cross over into major mainstream consciousness.

Today, with a pair of ugly losses in which Tebow and the Broncos offense started strong but ultimately collapsed, the national buzz has diminished, significantly.? Though Tebow can get it back by leading the Broncos to a win over the Chiefs and former Denver starter Kyle Orton, the past two weekends prove that the flavor of the month sometimes is only the flavor of the week.

At some point, Tebowmania likely will return to the top of the non-sports news cycle.? Also, he remains the hottest thing going in Denver.

Still, his inability to deliver further heroics at home against the Patriots or to stay within 20 points of a bad Buffalo team on Christmas Eve has served as a stark reminder that the latest big name in sports is at any given time only a couple of bad games away from again becoming just another face in the crowd.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Divorce: Maria Shriver Changing Her Mind?

Maria Shriver is now unsure if she wants to divorce Arnold Schwarzenegger.

According to sources close to the couple, Shriver is torn about whether to proceed with the split, partly because of her strong religious beliefs that do not include divorce, and for even more obvious reasons - the couple's four children.

Maria Shriver, Arnold Schwarzenegger

Moreover, Arnold still desperately wants Maria back, and has been "extremely sweet" to her, making numerous gestures (including presents) to try to win Maria back.

The Expendables 2 star, for his part, has been hoping to reconcile from the moment the couple split, though it looked like a lost cause, given his infidelities.

Maria filed for divorce on July 1, though she moved out months earlier. She's already bought a mansion in Brentwood, Calif., which she's in the process of renovating.

Shriver was reportedly unhappy for years, but the revelation that Arnold had a love child with housekeeper Mildred Patricia Baena years ago was the last straw.

Or was it? Stay tuned.

2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl Preview from the Sports Mac

These must be interesting times for the folks who run the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.? In the past, this matchup usually had paired two of the top teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 and it was one of the bowls to watch in between Christmas and New Year?s Day.?

But then a couple of years ago, a lot of the BCS conferences started to shift when their respective teams would end the season and, unfortunately, the Holiday Bowl was one of the bowls that got the short straw.? While they still have teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 participating, the teams are further down each conference?s pecking order.? For this year, the Holiday Bowl features two teams that had up and down seasons.

California certainly got 2011 off to a great start winning their first three games, including a three-point overtime win in their Pac-12 opener on the road at Colorado.? Then the rough patch came and the Golden Bears lost four of their next five with blowout conference losses at Pac-12 champion Oregon, home against USC and at Pac-12 South champion UCLA.? But California was able to right the ship and finish strong, winning three of their last four games with the only loss being on the road at rival Stanford.? That finish allowed the Golden Bears to finish the season with seven wins and participate in the Holiday Bowl for the third time and the first time since 2006.

It?s been a rough couple of years for the University of Texas.? After playing in the 2010 BCS Championship Game, the Longhorns had a big letdown the following season, winning only five games and missing bowl eligibility.?

This season got off to a fine start as they won their first four games.? Then came the Red River Shootout with Oklahoma.? It turned into a nightmare as the Sooners ran all over the Cotton Bowl and destroyed Texas by 38 points.? As the Longhorns were reeling from that loss, red hot Oklahoma State came to Austin and walked out with a 12-point victory.? That set the tone for the second half of the season as Texas was a mediocre 3-3 and capped the regular season by getting blown out again, this time at Baylor.?

Regardless, the Longhorns won seven games and are back in the postseason.? This will be the Longhorns fifth Holiday Bowl and first visit here since 2007.

So, who will win their eighth game of the season and carry momentum into 2012?? Read on for the preview of the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.

?

California Offense vs. Texas Defense

California?s offense has been fairly good all season long.? They have been able to move the ball and score points, averaging almost 420 yards and just under 30 points per game this season.? But they did struggle in that bad stretch in the middle of the year mentioned above, when they scored just 38 points in those three defeats.? Zach Maynard is the man under center and he has been fairly effective, accounting for 245 yards of total offense per game, which was 41st nationally.? He has help from RB Isi Sofele, who ran for over 105 yards per game, and WR Keenan Allen, who had 105 receiving yards per game.? They?ll be facing a Texas defense that has been very good all season.? They finished in the top 15 in rushing defense, pass efficiency defense and scoring defense.? They have had bad outings this year, including the regular season finale.? They?ll be looking for redemption and will want to prove that this is one of the better defenses in the country.

Edge: Texas

?

Texas Offense vs. California Defense

The Longhorns have been well balanced all season, but that can be deceiving.? They averaged just over 400 yards per game and while they ran for over 210 yards per game, they were only able to throw for 194 yards per contest, which was only 85th nationally.? David Ash and Case McCoy have both had shots at quarterback and McCoy seems to have become the man to lead the offense and there have been growing pains.? The Longhorns have had a running back by committee this season led by Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron.? Jaxon Shipley is the leading receiver, but he has under five receptions per game.? California?s defense has been fairly good finishing just outside the top 25 in total defense.? But they have had a tendency to give up points, as the Golden Bears have given up more the 30 points seven times this season.? This matchup is too close to call as both units have been OK and nothing more.

Who will win the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl?

Who will win the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl?

  • California

  • Texas

Edge: Even

?

Special Teams

Each team has an area of strength here that they?ll be looking to exploit in San Diego.? For California, they have had one of the stronger kicking games in the nation this year.? P Bryan Anger averaged over 44 yards per kick and K Giorgio Tavecchio finished tied for 11th in FG per game.? For Texas, they finished eighth in the nation in punt returns and 18th in kickoff returns.? Either unit has a chance to make a big impact in what should be a tight contest.

Edge: Even

?

Coaching

Jeff Tedford has California back to his winning ways after a down year in 2010 and he has now guided the Golden Bears to their eighth bowl game in his 10 seasons, winning five of them.? Mack Brown has got Texas back to a winning season after suffering his first losing one in his 13 seasons as the head Longhorn.? He is still 100 games over .500 in Austin and has won two-thirds of the games in his career.

Edge: Texas

?

This and That

Both teams should be motivated as they are back in the postseason after missing out last year.? While California fans have the shorter trip, the Longhorns might have the crowd advantage as Texas fans will show up in droves no matter where the team plays.? Texas might also have motivation because with a good performance here, they could end the season in the final Top 25, something they could not say last season.

Edge: Texas

?

So, What Will Happen in the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl

While California won three of its last four and Texas lost three of its last four, the Longhorns are the better team here this night.? While it won?t be an easy victory, Texas will continue its climb back toward the top of the Big 12 and use this game as a springboard for 2012.

Line: Texas by 3

Dominican singer and former Miss Universe Amelia Vega is getting married to compatriot and NBA player Al Horford.

The ceremony was expected to be held Saturday at the home of the 26-year-old singer's uncle, award-winning Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra.

The marriage will be the first for the singer and the Atlanta Hawks forward-centre, who was an All-Star in the previous two NBA seasons.

In 2003, then 18-year-old Vega became the first Dominican to win the Miss Universe crown.

After passing the title on to her successor, the Dominican national living in Miami opened two exclusive clothing stores there, hosted television programmes and this year launched her first album, 'Agua Dulce' (Fresh Water).

Horford, 25, has played his three NBA seasons with the Hawks, where he averaged 12 points per game.

MCX crude oil to remain higher on inventory concerns

Crude oil futures briefly pushed above the $100/barrel mark to settled with a gain of +1.03% at 5268 on MCX due to sharply lower inventories and strong US leading indicators.

Slight weakness in the US dollar helped push crude prices higher. Dollar weakness normally helps commodity prices, as it increases their appeal as an alternative asset and makes dollar priced commodities less expensive for holders of other currencies. Jobless claims in the US dropped by 4k last week and leading indicators beat forecasts.

Meanwhile, US oil supplies hit decade lows fueling the bullish advance. Meanwhile, prices continued to draw support from a potential disruption to Middle Eastern oil supplies.

A series of at least 14 coordinated bombings hit Baghdad earlier in the day, killing at least 57 people. The bombings come just days after the last US troops left the country, renewing fears over sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia Muslim groups. Iraq pumped nearly 2.57mbls of oil per day last month.

Lingering concerns that the West would impose tougher sanctions on Iran over the country?s nuclear program also lent support.

Iran is the world's fourth largest oil producer, pumping nearly 5% of the world's oil in 2010. Now technically market is trading in the range as RSI for 18days is currently indicating 59.58, where as 50DMA is at 4987 and crude is trading above the same and getting support at 5226 and below could see a test of 5183 level, And resistance is now likely to be seen at 5293, a move above could see prices testing 5317.

Trading Ideas:

Crude trading range is 5183-5317.
Crude oil briefly pushed above the $100 per barrel mark due to sharply lower inventories and strong US leading indicators.
Crude can see pressure as government data showed that US economic growth was slower than previously estimated Q3.
Lingering concerns that the West would impose tougher sanctions on Iran over the country?s nuclear program also lent support.

Business News: O'Brien Waste Recycling Solutions creates new jobs in Metrocentre deal

WASTE management firm O?Brien Waste Recycling Solutions has created new jobs and expanded after landing a ?2m deal to help Europe?s biggest shopping centre reduce its environmental impact.

The contract will see the North East-based company recycle 96% of the waste produced by the Metrocentre, Gateshead, with the aim of making it the greenest shopping centre in the UK in 2012.

The business will divert almost all of the waste from the retail centre which may have previously gone to a landfill to processing plants where it will be fully recycled, while also providing additional training for centre staff about recycling.

O?Brien has added four new members of staff to its 320-strong workforce and increased its fleet by two vehicles to facilitate the new contract and has also invested in expanding its materials recovery facility.

Nathan O?Brien, director of waste management at the company, said: ?This is an excellent contract to have been awarded.?

Dave Dixon, environmental services manager at the Metrocentre, said: ?The partnership between O?Brien and Metrocentre will help to reinforce all of our waste management practices that we have undertaken over recent years.

?O?Brien will also allow us to achieve one of our main targets, which is to send zero waste to landfill. This was a major factor in our decision to enlist O?Brien to work with us.?

Every year the Metrocentre generates around 4,500 tonnes of waste, of which 70% is recycled.

Alternatives to carbon markets to finance REDD | redd-monitor.org

By Chris Lang, 23rd December 2011

flattr this!

Alternatives to carbon markets to finance REDD

At the beginning of the UN climate negotiations in Durban (COP17), FERN published a short report looking at carbon markets as a means of financing REDD. The briefing, which was signed on to by 28 organisations explains why carbon markets will not deliver for southern governments, forests and people.

The briefing can be downloaded here. It starts with the question, ?How much money is needed?? and explains that although this has been a primary focus of discussions on REDD, it is the wrong question. More important than the amount of money needed, is ?a clear action plan to address the underlying drivers of forest loss coupled with sufficient political will to implement the plan?.

In the period 2010-2012, more than US$8 billion has been promised or is expected from government funds for REDD, compared to US$600 million from voluntary markets and nothing whatsoever from compliance markets. This is unlikely to change much before 2020, the briefing argues, because the largest carbon market, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme does not currently accept forest offset and will not do so until at least 2020.

Most of the growth in carbon trading volume up to 2010 was in the secondary markets. In other words, most carbon trading is carried out by banks and speculators. Even this growth is currently stagnating. Since 2008 Bank of America,?ABN Amro,?UBS
Warburg?and?Credit Suisse have closed or reduced the size of their carbon trading desks. Meanwhile, ?Forest offsets in the voluntary carbon market have been fraught with difficulties,? the briefing notes. There are several examples of dubious or damaging forest carbon projects in the largely unregulated voluntary carbon market.

Even with a forest carbon market, little money would actually reach the forests. Most of the money would end up in the hands of intermediaries: speculators, banks, consulting firms, certifying firms and so on. It is also unlikely that a carbon market would finance forest conservation in countries where the risks of corruption are high. More than 75% of CDM projects are in three countries: China, India and Brazil. A similar pattern is likely with REDD finance via carbon markets.

The briefing also lists some alternatives to financing REDD through carbon trading (see the briefing for footnotes and sources). REDD-Monitor welcomes discussion on the merits (or otherwise) of these suggestions:

  • Financial Transaction Tax (FTT)
A tiny tax on financial transactions ? as little as one hundredth of a percent ? could raise US$650 billion per year.[17] Although many adaptation and mitigation measures would need to be financed through such a fund if it ever materialised, a small proportion would provide enough to help reduce deforestation. The European Commission and many European governments, including Germany and France, already support the FTT, and research from economic institutions including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has shown it to be technically feasible.[18]
  • Tax on international shipping and aviation
There are many different proposals on the table to tax international aviation and ?bunker? (shipping) fuel. The emissions from these industries are significant, and they are currently not only under-taxed, but also benefit from fossil fuel subsidies.[19] Redirecting these subsidies to climate mitigation and adaptation is another potential large source of finance.[20]
  • Public funds
Even in times of austerity measures, if government spending priorities were brought in line with their climate change policies, money would also become available for forest projects and for activities to deal with the drivers of deforestation. Government funding is still the major funding source for REDD as chart 1 shows.

Public funds could also be used to address illegal logging. The World Bank (WB) estimates that illegal timber may comprise over a tenth of a total global timber trade worth more than US$150 billion a year.[21] More funding and political support to address illegal logging would therefore go a long way to keep forests standing and provide funds to Southern governments.

  • Private investments
Projects where companies buy forests to speculate on financial markets (as is the case with trading in forest carbon credits) have led to many problems. However the Forest Trust?s Climate Tree project is an example of an initiative which channels private investment into improving forest use without letting Northern companies off the hook with regards to reducing their own emissions as carbon offset projects do.[22]

Finland ?finds Patriot missiles? on China-bound ship: Will the US Media notice?

BBC

Comment by Jim Campbell

In what would seem to be a career making story apparently the US media. Go ahead Google it, not important because it would reflect just how horribly this administration is run and what a total incompetent Obama actually is.

Apparently those that want to control out thoughts don?t want us to know about the insignificance of this mishap or shall we call it a ?Man made overseas disaster???

When you give it serious thought, what?s 69 missing Patriot missiles on the ship and around 160 tons of explosives among friends?

That?s my story and I?m sticking to it, I?m J.C. and I approve this message.

The Thor Liberty is docked in Kotka

The Finnish authorities have impounded an Isle of Man-flagged ship bound for China with undeclared missiles and explosives, officials say.

The MS Thor Liberty left port in Emden, northern Germany, on 13 December and docked two days later in Kotka, southern Finland, to pick up a cargo of anchor chains, said Finnish Customs spokesman Petri Lounatmaa.

Patriot missile systems are supplied to US allies

It was bound for the Chinese port of Shanghai but there was no indication for whom the military cargo was destined.

Routine checks by Finland?s traffic safety authority revealed a load of up to 160 tonnes of improperly packed nitroguanidine, a low-sensitivity explosive with a high detonation speed.

?Actually in our investigation at the moment, we have got the information that we found 69 Patriot missiles on the ship and around 160 tonnes of explosives,? said Detective Superintendent Timo Virtanen from the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation.

Interior Minister Rasanen said she had not heard of a similar case.

?Of course, there are legal transports of weapons or defence material [through Finland] but in this case the cargo was marked as containing fireworks,? she told Finnish media. ?That is quite unusual.?

Mr Lounatmaa said customs officials and police had launched a joint investigation into a possible breach of Finnish export and weapons trading laws.
